Death by a Honeybee is the first in the Josiah Reynolds Mystery series. This debut novel from Abigail Keam won many awards and continues to be a favorite among readers. The main character of this series, as you may have guessed, is Josiah Reynolds. He is a former professor of art history, but he used to be so much more than just a former professor.
Reynolds even used to be a celebrity and had all of the wealth and social status that came along with being that and a well to do wife that had hooked a famous husband. But it’s all fleeting, and while it used to seem like it would be around forever, it has all been gone for quite some time. Just like Elvis, the celebrity, the money, and the husband and lifestyle have all long since left the building. She used to be a celebrity and professor, but now her circumstances are greatly different and she’s making a living off the land.
Josiah has retired and now works full-time around the clock as a beekeeper. She’s trying to make ends meet by working with the bees and selling what she makes from that at the market. While she’s doing well enough to be staying afloat. But everything takes a brutal one hundred and eighty degree turn when a corpse is discovered in all places in her yard with all her bees. It’s not only bad enough that a body has been found in her area, but the victim turns out to be her main competitor. Not to mention that they used to be enemies in a way.
Since this is definitely not a death by accident, the only conclusion can be murder. The brutal death means that Josiah is their top suspect since it’s her property and bee yard that he was found on. It’s up to her to try and prove her name by figuring out who would want to frame her since someone definitely put the body there. She’s helped by her assistant Matt. He may be twenty years younger than her and gay, but Josiah needs someone to help her figure out this thing and Matt is pretty sharp.
She also has the assistance of Shaneika, her lawyer. Shaneika is African-American and has long been rumored to be the descendant of a wealthy Lexington family that was historically prominent. Josiah has a daughter that comes into her life occasionally and pulls strings that she can to keep her mother out of danger. Her daughter is powerful, but she is also secretive. She does what she can to look out for her mother.
In the horse country with Bluegrass and good country living, Josiah lives among characters that could only be located in Kentucky. This charming novel finds Josiah struggling to make a living and clear her name in a place that seems like it is just chock full of secrets. In the middle of a glamorous world where bourbon cured in oak barrels, beautiful horses, plantation houses and more, Josiah must take on an invisible threat for the purpose of clearing her name and keeping her land and freedom.
