William Dietrich is one of the most popular novelists from The United States who likes to write his novels based on the thriller, nonfiction, and historical mystery genres. The historical mystery books written by him are set at the time of the Second World War as well as during the time of the Roman Empire. Author William’s nonfiction books are based on the environmental theme and are set around the Pacific West. He is particularly well known for writing the Ethan Gage series of novels. Author William began his writing career in the 1992 and became a published novelist with the release of his debut book titled The Final Forest. It was actually a nonfiction book. The first fiction novel written by him was Ice Reich. It was released in the year 1998. Other than being an author, he has also tried his hand at journalism and teaching as a college professor. Several of his books have hit the bestseller lists, which helped him to become a noteworthy author. The Ethan Gage series in particular, which is set at the time of the Napoleonic wars, has been sold in more than 28 foreign languages all across the globe. Author William was born on September 29, 1951, in Tacoma, Washington, The United States as William Alan Dietrich. He completed his academic studies from the Fairhaven College at the Western Washington University and graduated with a journalism degree. After that, he worked for a few newspapers in the Pacific Northwest as well as for the Gannett News agency. When he was working for The Seattle Times, he got the opportunity to cover the Exxon Valdez incident in 1989 which caused oil spill in the Alaskan waters.
Author William was awarded with the Pulitzer Prize for his national reporting of the incident and shared it along with 3 other journalists from the agency. Between the years 1987 and 1988, he joined the Harvard University as a Neiman Fellow. He even won the fellowships of the National Science Foundation to Antartica first in 1994 and then again in 1996. Throughout his journalist career, author William reported extensively on the subjects of environment and science. And he continued to do so in his writing career also. In fact, in his first book, William has depicted the spotting of owl battles and old growth in Forks, Washington. For his beautiful depiction of the environment, author William won the Writer’s Award from the Washingto Governor and Pacific Northwest Booksellers prize. Later in his career, he wrote books on a wide range of environmental topics such as the Columbia River, animals and plants of the Northwest, etc. William also wrote the text for the pictorial book of photographer Art Wolfe, titled on Puget Sound. The first full length novel written by him, which is an adventure novel set during the Word War II, grew out greatly of his Antartica reporting. This was followed by several other books published in his career till the recent times.
Since the year 2006, author William has been working as a college professor, giving lectures on environmental journalism and creative writing at the Huxley Environment College at the Western Washington University. He also works as an advisor for the Planet magazine. As of today, author William resides in Washington state along with his lovely wife named Holly and a couple of grown up daughters. Author William is a frequent traveler and he has visited numerous places between the Arctic and the South Pole, and from the Dead Sea to the Mount Everest base camp. Many of his books are filled with the information from his travel adventures. Whenever author William is not busy with his writing schedule, he likes to indulge himself in reading interesting books, watching movies, learning about historical events and science, as well as traveling to new places. As a writer, author William thinks of writing as a hard profession, but he intends that whatever articles and books that he writes will help him save the world. For this, he considers himself blessed to have worked with some of the greatest publishers and journalists of his time. He has been very fond of history since his childhood days and this fondness grew even more when he traveled to Great Britain in the year 1996 and witnessed an old Roman fortification in northern England called as Hardrian’s Wall.
The Ethan Gage series written by William Dietrich is comprised of a total of 8 books, which were released between the years 2007 and 2015. One of the books in this series is titled as ‘The Rosetta Key’. The Harper publication released it in the year 2008. In this book, American adventurer Ethan Gage is depicted as solving a 5 thousand year old riddle after discovering a mysterious medallion. At the beginning, Gage is shown as getting hurled in to pursue an ancient scroll from Egypt. At the same time, Bonaparte begins to invade Israel in 1799. As Gage pursues Napoleon Bonaparte to France, he comes across a few old enemies and some new friends. The General hopes that the ancient secrets in France will help him gain power and for this purpose, Ethan Gage is required to use all his wit to stay alert. He must also use the archaeological key to stop the dark powers from gaining control all over the world. Overall, the novel proved to highly entertaining and evocative. Author William has described a fast paced and cliff hanger historical adventure filled with intense mystery and intrigues.
The next book published by the Harper publishers in this series is titled as ‘The Barbary Pirates’. It was released in the year 2010. Author William has once again described Ethan Gage as going on a thrilling adventure. He has continued to show him as a wiry, humorous, battle scarred hero, who does what he thinks is right. The adventurous set up of the book depicts Gage as not less than Sir Harry Flashman or Indiana Jones. With the success of the book, author William was able to more achievements in his already bestselling writing career. In the starting plot, Gage is shown returning to Paris in order to escort 3 fellow savants. They include, a zoologist named Georges Cuvier, a geologist named William Smith, and an inventor named Robert Fulton. As Gage moves through the wilds of the underworld in Paris along with these men, he gets attacked by an Egyptian man. This man claims that he has information about the lost love of Gage, named Astiza. Later, the men are caught by the French police and sent to Napoleon. He sends them to solve a recently uncovered mystery on the Thira island.

I do not see any new books by author William Dietrich. His last published book was in 2016. I really missed his books. He is great writer and I used to look forward his every new book.
I really hope he is still writing and is working on his next book.
