Chronological Order of Mitch Rapp Books

Mitch Rapp Biography:

Mitch Rapp – The Ultimate American Hero. Mitch Rapp is the protagonist and hero of author Vince Flynn’s novels prior to his death. Kyle Mills took over the series after Flynn’s passing. The first novel under Mills is The Survivor. All books follow the publication order chronologically except for American Assassin and Kill Shot. American Assassin should be ready first chronologically, followed by Kill Shot, then the rest of the books.

However, Vince Flynn stated in an interview previously that he would prefer readers read the books in the publication order to get full effect. Each of the Mitch Rapp novels are narrated by Rapp and are the story of his exploits as a counterterrorism operator for the United States government. An all American boy and a high school lacrosse star, Rapp was recruited to play the sport at both Syracuse University and the University of North Carolina.

Ultimately, Rapp chose to attend Syracuse University because his boyhood crush and girlfriend, Maureen, enrolled at the university to study broadcasting. Rapp led the life of a college athlete until his world came to a screeching halt when his girlfriend was killed. Maureen was returning from a semester abroad when her plane, Pan Am Flight 103, was blown up in a terrorist attack. With Rapp’s life in shambles, he turned his aggression to researching the people responsible for his girlfriend’s death.

Prior to graduating from Syracuse, Mitch was recruited to join the CIA by Irene Kennedy. Knowing that the CIA needed athletic and impressionable operatives to prevent terrorist attacks against the US, Irene used the anger that she knew Rapp felt to convince him to join the CIA. Kennedy offered Mitch an opportunity he could not refuse: the chance to hunt down those responsible for Maureen’s death. The week after graduating from Syracuse with a major in international business and a minor in French, Mitch Rapp entered the CIA’s training program.

However, unlike other agency recruits Rapp did not attend “The Farm” and instead entered into a secretive training program with Stan Hurley a former CIA operative. Stan trained Rapp in how to hunt, stab, use explosives and kill with just his hands. The program was designed to make Mitch the ultimate US weapon: a killing machine. Not only did he train physically, but he also trained mentally by learning fluent Arabic, Persian, German, and Italian.

Rapp can also speak passable Urdu and Pashto. After going through training, Rapp becomes an operative of the Orion Team. The Orion Team is an ultra secret government program that is supported by the CIA, but run outside of its boundaries. In other words, The Orion Team operates without rules. The team was formed after the Pan Am bombings as a unit designed to skirt the boundaries of the law and operate without rules.

An extremely secretive unit, the origins of the team are known only to a select few. The team is run by Rapp’s recruiter and motherly figure, Irene Kennedy. From day one, Rapp is the star of the Orion Team. Rapp has spent time tracking down intelligence for the US government throughout Europe, Latin America, Asia, and the Middle East. When asked, Rapp and his team must eliminate targets without the knowledge of the US government.

To protect his cover with the CIA, Rapp runs a small computer consulting business in Washington, D.C. Anyone questioning Rapp’s travel to exotic locales, would discover that his connection to the CIA is as a private contractor. Rapp’s business is actually very successful and he often conducts business while traveling to maintain his cover. To protect his identity, Rapp must keep his true profession hidden from his friends and family.

Luckily, Rapp’s only surviving family is a brother, a genius and multimillionaire. Rapp has made appearances in all thirteen of Vince Flynn’s novels and is expected to be used in a film adaptation of Flynn’s novel American Assassin.

The movie, produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Nick Wechsler, will tell the story of how Rapp became a CIA agent. It is believed that this book was chosen because it could be the starting point of a series of movies about Rapp similar to the Jason Bourne movies. Fans of Vince Flynn first meet the legendary Mitch Rapp in the novel, Transfer of Power. At the beginning of the book, Rapp is in the middle of a deep cover covert operation in Iran when he discovers the origins of a terrorist attack to occur in Washington D.C. in the coming days. Unbeknownst to Rapp, the terrorist attack is planned for the same day.

Flash forward to the same time in D.C., and the reader witnesses terrorists storming and taking control of the White House. With the President and many other political leaders being held hostage in the White House, Rapp must find a way to infiltrate and eliminate the terrorists. Ultimately, a team of Navy SEAL’s successfully re-enter the White House and save the hostages and rescue the President. However, the leader of the terrorists successfully escapes and is on the loose.

The President knowing that additional attacks are inevitable if the terrorist is not killed unleashes Mitch Rapp to find him and kill him. In Flynn’s next novel, The Third Option, Rapp is dispatched to Germany to assassinate an arms dealer that has been selling weapons to Saddam Hussein and other dangerous enemies of the US. While on the mission, Rapp is paired with a couple who after the successful assassination attempt to kill Rapp.

Rapp survives and returns to Washington D.C. seeking answers. Rapp is fearful that his employer the CIA and more importantly his boss, Irene Kennedy, might have ordered his assassination to cover up the events in Germany. However, after a persuasive chat with his employers he discovers that someone else has orchestrated the attempt on his life. Rapp soon learns that many of his fellow operatives are being killed and that his life is in jeopardy.

As he fights for his life, Rapp discovers that a powerful coalition of Americans are attempting to overthrow the President to establish their own agenda. Left with little options, Rapp must take the fight to these men in an effort to protect the Presidency and his life.

Readers searching for page-turning excitement will want to pick up the next Vince Flynn novel starring Mitch Rapp. The ultimate hero, Rapp is a covert operator traversing the world and keeping the US safe by eliminating our enemies and threats. With his all-American charm, rugged physique, and athletic skills Mitch Rapp is the ultimate counter terrorist operative. Sadly, Vince Flynn passed away on June 19th, 2013 of Prostate Cancer. Kyle Mills took over from The Survivor onwards.

The Mitch Rapp series is outstanding. I really wish they would bring it to the TV screen like they did with Lee Childs, Reacher series. I get the first movie they did flopped, but so did the Jack Reacher movie with Tom Cruise. I feel if they get just the right director, we could see all 23 books in a TV series. If Jack Ryan and Reacher can make it work, Mitch Rapp will knock it out of the park!

I agree. However, Tom Cruise is no Jack Reacher. On the other hand, Alan Ritchson is perfect in the TV series. They would have to pick the right actor for Mitch, like Asser Yassin or someone who could pass for Middle Eastern.

I really think that if Hollywood didn’t make such a botch job of American Assassin and stayed closer to the original story this could’ve been similar to the James Bond series. Possibly better. The Mitch Rapp character is bad ass.

I want to see Jason Bourne go against Mitch Rapp. Who wins? That would be awesome!

      I loved American assassin. I can’t believe it wasn’t a bigger hit.

I wish all these movies would stop insisting on changing the bad guys to Americans. It didn’t ruin American assassin but it had an effect. They did the same thing to clancys sum of all fears.

I’m with Henry Pratt – in Enemy of the State you state: Mills took over the reins of Vince Flynn after he passed in writing the Mitch Rapp series and has did an amazing job at it. Really? “has did”
