Cindy Woodsmall is an American author best known for writing book series including Sisters of the Quilt, Ada’s House, and The Amish of Summer Grove. She has written over twenty literary works in her career, ranging from fictitious solo projects to co-written non-fiction work.
She debuted in 2006 and hit the literary ground running and has more than proved herself ever since. Her expertise on various issues concerning the Amish religion is something that serves her well in her writing.
Woodsmall has been featured in multiple media outlets including a feature on ABC Nightline, on the front page of the Wall Street Journal, and helping to create a documentary on Amish life with National Geographic. She is considered one of the top Amish writers working today.
Cindy is married with children and she homeschooled the children herself. She had a desire to write, but her family responsibilities always came first. However, as they grew older and her urge to start writing rose, she eventually decided that she should begin her writing journey. Her husband was a big fan of of her journey and supported her along the way.
That journey has ultimately proved successful with not only her book sales, but also the multiple awards that she has won. In her career, she has won the Fiction Book of the Year, Reviewer’s Choice Awards, Inspirational Reader’s Choice Contest, as well as one of Crossings’ Best Books of the Year. In addition to those accolades, Cindy has also been a finalist for the Christy, Rita, and Carol Awards, as well as the Christian Book of the Year, and Christian Retailers Choice Awards.
Cindy’s real-life connections to the Amish Mennonite and Old Order Amish families are what really sets her apart from many other authors. This connection first began when she was just ten years old and became good friends with a neighbor named Luanna who was a Plain Mennonite girl. She dressed in the traditional prayer Kapp and dresses, and didn’t watch TV or listen to the radio. While the young girl would often come to stay with Cindy and her family, she would bring her rules with her when she stayed. Cindy would also spend the night at Luann’s house and live by those rules. The girls always felt like they needed to strictly follow those rules in order to ensure that either of their parents never ended the relationship.
While Cindy would eventually move away from Luann, she would become friends with an Old Order Amish family in her adult life. Miriam opened her home to Cindy and the two always share great times together with laughter and dreams. Cindy continues to build relationships with those in the Amish and Mennonite communities.
Cindy and her husband now make their home in the North Georgia Mountains. The couple are now empty nesters as their adult children have since made them grandparents.
When the Heart Cries is the first book in teh Sisters of the Quilt Amish series. The story introduces us to a seventeen-year-old named Hannah Lapp who is being raised in a traditional Old Order Amish family. She has the desire to break with custom and forgo baptism into faith, and instead wishes to marry outside of her community. She’s long been in love with Mennonite Paul Waddell who is attending college. Just before he is to return for his senior year, he asks for Hannah to be his wife. She accepts even as she knows that means that this marriage will change the relationship she has with her family forever. However, her whole life changes in a different way when on the night of their engagement, tragedy strikes and Hannah sees all that she knows and believes in destroyed. She has questions that the Old Ways of her people can’t answer and she must deal with the possibility of losing everything.
The Ada’s House series begins with The Hope of Refuge. Cara Moore is a widowed mother fighting against poverty. Making matters worse, she is also dealing with a relentless stalker who won’t stop bothering her. When the stalker ransacks her home in New York, she has finally had enough and decides to leave the city and heads off towards Amish country looking for a fresh start. She goes to Dry Lake, Pennsylvania only to find that it is no place for an outsider and that she is paying for some long-held family secrets. However, there is one man, Ephraim, who dares to do what is right despite how it may threaten his way of life. While Ephraim’s sister Deborah is dealing with her own issues when the man she pledged to build a life with begins withdrawing from the community.
The Sound of Sleigh Bells is the first book in the Apple Ridge series of books. The story follows a woman named Beth Hertzler who works alongside her aunt in the dry good store. She is the go-between between the Amish craftsmen and the Englischers who want to sell the Plain people’s things. Her work is going well, but she is haunted by remorse and loneliness as she mourns the loss of her fiance. One day, she finds something stir inside of her when she discovers a large, intricately carved scene of Amish children playing in the snow. Beth responds to this and wants to help the artist find homes for his work. The artist is Jonah who meets Beth’s aunt Lizzy first. Lizzy becomes convinced that this is the man who can help her niece get a second chance at love.
Another series by Woodsmall is The Amish of Summer Grove which begins with Ties That Bind. Ariana Brenneman loves her family and the Old Ways that surround them. She has dreams of keeping any more of the Amish from being lured away by Quill Schlabach to the Englisch life. Quill and Frieda, Ariana’s former friend, left five years ago and she still feels the hurt of the betrayal. One day, she encounters Quill and learns that he has plans to help another leave the community. What she doesn’t know is there is a reason for what Quill has done and that he’s always hoped to protect her. He has a love and loyalty to her, and hopes to regain her trust.
