The Rebecka Martinson series is a series of detective fiction, mystery, and crime fiction series written by the extremely popular Swedish novelist named Asa Larsson. This series is comprised of a total of 5 books that were released between the years 2006 and 2013. Each and every book in the series features the lead character as Rebecka Martinson, who is introduced by author Asa as a tax lawyer from Stockholm. Rebecka is shown by author Asa as returning back to her hometown called Kiruna on a number of occasions from Stockholm in order to help solve the criminal cases over there. The town of Kiruna is depicted as being located in the northern region of the Arctic Circle. Author Asa Larsson began writing the Rebecka Martinson series in the year 2003 and released its first book in the same year under the title of ‘Solstorm’. The book was written and published in the Swedish language. It was later translated into English as well as a number of other foreign languages in the year 2006 and published again in the other parts of the world under the title of ‘Sun Storm’. The initial success of the book in Sweden helped it to gain even more popularity in the rest of the countries of the world. In the year following the grand success of the debut novel, it was chosen to be adapted into a movie. Author Asa has stated that she is still working on the future plots of the series that will also feature Rebecka Martinsson as the chief protagonist. She is going to publish a few of those novels in the days to come.
Throughout the series, Rebecka Martinsson is portrayed as a workaholic lawyer, who works at a well known law firm in Stockholm. After some time in this profession, she begins to get haunted by the nightmares from her past life. Rebecka becomes very much terrified at this. Eventually, Rebecka decides to leave behind her fast track career and goes on to take up the job of a public prosecutor. In order to help solve a few important cases, she even heads back to her roots located in Kiruna. Her intention behind traveling north was to achieve a state of peace of mind. But, instead of that she finds herself at the center of several gruesome murders. As the blood of the victims begins to wash the snow red, the echoes of the history start resounding the present. The local police struggles to solve the puzzles related to the murders. One among them is the hardworking and dedicated inspector named Anna-Maria Mella. She teams up with Rebecka Martinsson to find the important clue and evidences leading to the criminal masterminds. The two eventually help to solve the series of crime taking place in Kiruna. Author Asa decided to set the crime fiction series in Kiruna as it is her own hometown and she is quite familiar with it. While describing Kiruna, she has said that it gets engulfed by darkness during the winters and illuminated by endless lights in summer. Even though author Asa has written the series in the crime genre, she has moved beyond the constraints of the genre quite often. It can be evidently seen in the series’ novels. Asa has quite efficiently drawn the portraits of animals and people, along with her sharp insights in psychology as well her deep love for the language. Due to all these reasons, the series has been included in the list the top mysteries that should be read by every woman. Oprah Winfrey has described the title character of Rebecka Martinsson as a brilliant and believable female detective.
The debut novel of the Rebecka Martinsson series is titled as ‘Sun Storm’. It was released in the year 2006 by the Delta publication. The start of the book shows a man’s dead body lying on a church’s floor in northern Sweden, in a mutilated condition. And outside, people seem to be celebrating the arrival of winter. This marks the beginning of the spellbinding thriller novel. Rebecka Martinsson is introduced into the plot as traveling back to her home in Kiruna, which she had left a few years ago in disgrace. As an attorney from Stockholm, she appears to have a good reason to head back to Kiruna. The brother of her best friend named Sanna is found murdered in a horrific condition in the same church that he had helped to create. Being fragile, Sanna seems to be in an urgent need of help from Rebecka Martinsson. Rebecka had some feelings towards Sanna’s brother and due to this, she was more than willing to help Sanna. But, in order to do so, she must once again face the darkness that she had left behind long back in Kiruna. In her attempt to find out the real killer, Rebecka must delve into a deceitful conspiracy. Also, she must be fully prepared to confront the murderer, whose intentions seem extremely wrenching, dark, and unpredictable.
Another popular book written in the series by author Asa is titled as ‘Until Thy Wrath be Past’. This book was published by Silver Oak publishers in the year 2008. The book opens up with the description of the murder of teenage lovers named Simon Kyro and Wilma Persson. The dead body of the girl is found after a few months from a different place. The forensic report suggests that she did not die in the place where her body was found. This makes it clear that Wilma’s body was moved after murdering her. Soon, the case of missing persons gets turned into a murder investigation with inspector Anna Maria and Rebecka Martinsson also getting involved in it. As the story progresses, the mystery behind the murder of the teenagers begins to unravel slowly. Rebecka and Ann Maria get acquainted with the bigger picture related to the support of Sweden to Germany in the ongoing Second World War. And a local family lies at the center of the history. A couple of sinister brothers named Hjalmar and Tore Krekula seem to be ruling the community by force. But, they do not stand any chance in front of the dedicated efforts of Anna-Maria and Rebecka. In the end, this novel too proves to be a captivating read with the help of its twists and turns right from the first page.
