Katrina Elizabeth Dicamillio was born on March 25 1964. She is an American writer who mainly specializes in children fiction books of all ages and levels. She is among the six people to receive two Newberry medals, with two of her novels being recognized The Tale of the Despareux and Flora and Ulyses. Kate is widely known for the Mercy Watson series, which has been illustrated by Chris Van Dusen. Elizabeth was at one time appointed by the Library of Congress to serve as the U.S National Assembly Ambassador for the Young People Literature in the year 2014 and 2015.

Born in Philadelphia, Kate Dicammilio battled with chronic pneumonia from a tender age. At 5 years, Kate moved to Clermot, Florida together with her brother who was later on to become an accomplished architecture and her mother, since the climate was so much warmer and would assist Kate in getting better. Kate’s mother was a teacher while her father who was an orthodontic practitioner remained in Philadelphia to continue running his clinic. Dicamillio joined the University of Pennislivania where she graduated in the year 1987 with a degree in English. She worked in Florida before graduating.

At the age of 30 years, she moved to Minneapolis where she began working at a book warehouse. Her job at the book warehouse inspired her to start writing children’s books. This job also allowed her to meet up with a Candlewick press sales representative whom assisted her in submitting her very first draft. This draft would later on become the Because of Winn-Dixx. Her friend’s son, Luke Bailey, inspired her 2013 novel, The Tale of Despareux. Luke Bailey had asked Kate to write about an unlikely hero who had exceedingly huge ears.

Kate Dicammilio has received numerous awards such as the American Library Association, which recognized her contribution to America literature for children. The following year, she once again won the same award with the book series Flora and Ulysses. She is among the six writers who have ever won the awards twice ever since it was introduced in the year 1922. In the year 2000, she won the Jossette Franklin Award with her novel just because and in the year 2006 she won the Boston Globe Horn Book award in the Children’s books fiction category with the book The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. In the year 2011, Kate together with her co-writer Alison McGhee and illustrator Tony Fucile received the Theodore Seuss Geisel Medal for the book Blink and Gollie.

In the year 2011, Winn Dixie was ranked position 30 among the all-time children’s novels. This survey was published in a survey conducted by School library journal, which is a monthly journal for audiences in the United States. Other books which made the top 100 list includes Edward Tulane which was ranked number 59 and Despereux which was ranked number 51. With that said, in the year 2005, Because of Winn-Dixie was adapted and released as a movie by the critically acclaimed 20th Fox Century. In the year 2009, Universal pictures released the movie, The Tale of Despereux. New Line Cinema opted for the book Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane and currently it is in the pre-production phase.

Bink and Gollie: Two for One

In this installment, best friends Bink and Gollie decide to sample the state fair’s glory. As we have seen in the previous installment, Bink and Gollie are opposites who complement each other. Bink is a bundle of enthusiasm while Gollie is not only taller but also highly sophisticated. The well-drawn illustrations are not only lavish but they also match the energies of the main characters. Each of the short stories in this installment is a complete tale instead of a chapter within a large story. The first story in this installment is Whack a Duck, which is prefaced with the story of the roller-skating girls who were gazing at advertisement signs.

Bink wants to know if Gollie is cool with the two of the going to the state fair. Inside the state fair, Bink decides to participate in the Whack a Duck competition. Bink being an all-electrical energy she fails to hurtle the ball. Upon trying she fails to hit the target. She tries and tries again but fails to hit the target. The second story in this book is You are Special, Aren’t You? It begin with the two girls gazing at a sign for an amateur show. Gollie becomes ecstatic and decides that she is going to participate in the show. She quickly affirms her yearnings even when she is reminded that she was going to have to stand in front of an audience. Later on, Gollie waits for her turn to perform while her friend Bink sits by the judges while looking at the other contestants on the stage. Two for One is an excellent read.

Bink and Gollie; Best Friends Forever

In the third book in this series by Kate Dicamillio, Bink and Gollie are exceedingly true to their original form. Bink is stubborn as usual while Gollie is superior as ever. The great thing about these character traits is that they are great for an excellent story. In the first tale, Gollie happens to come across her great aunt’s photo in which she has a crown on. Ever since she was young, Gollie has always suspected that she was from the royal family and hear is all the proof she needs. The second storyline in this book, talks about Bink’s desire to be tall. Her attention is caught by an advertisement for a device which looks somehow like the medieval torture rack, the Stretch-o-Matic device.

Just as expected the results do not turn out as planned. However, Bink finds another way to be satisfied with her purchase. The last storyline in this book has Bink searching for a collectible. Inspired by Arcana of the Extraordinary, the two girls make an attempt to get their photos and names in the heavy thome. Towards the end, they succeed, but not in a way that most readers would have expected. Just like in all the other books, Tony Fuclie’s illustrations are outstanding and in Best Friends Forever, they are exceedingly strong.
