Amongst the many children’s writers and illustrators of the modern era, there is no doubt that Grace Lin has an important role to play. Born in the year 1974, Lin is a well known and highly respected writer whose specific area of focus is young children. Her parents were basically immigrants who settled in The US. She grew up in New York and did her graduation from Rhode Island’s School of Design. Aged 42 years, Lin now resides in Somerville, Massachusetts. She is married and has a daughter born in 2012. Over the years she has written quite a few books which have caught the imagination of children in particular and other book lovers in general. She has written a number of books ranging from Starry River of The Sky to The Year of The Rat. She has a unique and different way of writing which attracts and mesmerizes children to say the least.
Awards
It would be pertinent to mention here that she has been nominated for quite a few prestigious awards. Her famous book Where the Mountain Meets The Moon has won the prestigious 2011 Newbery Honor Book Mention. Additionally she got the same award in 2007 for her book Year of The Dog. In the same year she also was nominated for the famous Texas Bluebonnet Award.
Works of Grace Lin
Grace Lin started writing at an early age of 25 and her first book was The Ugly Vegetables. The book was published in the year 1999 and it received very good response and critical acclaim. Thus started her writing career and over the past seventeen years she has written around seventeen individual books. Additionally she also has penned three Children’s Fairytale Series apart from coming out with the famous Ling & Ting series which has four books to it. Additionally it also would be pertinent to mention here that she has written two books under the Pacy Series titled the Year Of The Rat and The Year Of The Cat.
A Look At A Few Of Her Books
It would difficult to talk about each and every book which she has written over the past few years. However, we will try and look at two of her famous books which have left a lasting impression in the minds of thousands of her readers and these books also have won her critical acclaim. As mentioned above a few of her books have won her awards and special mention. One such book is Where The Mountain Meets The Moon. This is a fantastic adventure book of Grace Lin in the same style of The Wizard Of the Oz. It is about the story of a girl named Minli who lives in the Valley of the Fruitless Mountain. She works hard in the fields during the day and the nights are spent listening to the wonderful fairytale woven nicely and told by her father. The story is about Jade The Dragon and the Old Man Of the Moon. However, Minli’s mother is least interested in these stories given the fact that the entire family was in poverty. She therefore kept chiding her husband and was not happy that her daughter was seemingly being fed with nonsense.
However, Minli is fascinated by the story of her dad and accidently she encounters a number of magical and weird characters along the way. She also comes across a dragon which also is keen to accompany her in her quest for Old Man of the Moon. Fantastically written, it is gripping, naturally flowing and children well and truly relish it and many of them consider it unputdownable.
The Year of The Dog is another wonderfully written book and the book is centered round the main character, a girl by the name Grace. It is about a girl who migrates to the USA from Taiwan (incidentally, Grace Lin is also a Taiwanese immigrant). She is called Pacy in the home while in school she is better known as Grace. Grace is from a family which respects their tradition and culture and they celebrate the Chinese New Year with aplomb and class. This celebration is all about the Year Of the Dog which in fact symbolizes friends. Grace comes across a girl called Melody, who also is of the same origin. While there are quite a few similarities between them, they also have quite a few differences. Melody is good at speaking Taiwanese while Grace cannot. Melody is careful about what she eats while Grace is more at home with junk foods. Grace and Melody in their quest to learn new things in their life take part in a number of school activities. Will Grace be able to fulfill her dream of being a talented person? The book provides the answer as it weaves it way through the various twists and turns associated with their school life. The illustrator of the above two characters is Grace Lin and she has well and truly done an amazing job.
Though Grace Lin has penned a number of books, illustrations, and series, none of her books have been made into movies. There is however, a growing demand amongst many readers that a few of her masterpieces should be made into movies and it is hoped that things will certainly become a reality in the none-too distant future.
Conclusion
In fine there is little doubt that in today’s world where the internet, computers and other audio-visual mediums have all but killed reading habits amongst children, the works of Grace Lin continue to inspire thousands of students across the world. It certainly is tribute to her style of writing. What perhaps makes her different from others is the fact that she writes in a style and tone which is highly appealing to the kids. It is simple in language but at the same highly captivating and interesting. Being of a reasonably young age, there are reasons to believe that Grace Lin has many more years or perhaps even decades of quality writing left ahead of her. Apart from the 26 odd books, illustrations and series she has written, the remaining part of her life may see writing dozens of various books covering various areas of interest of children.
