Amber Nicole Benson gained popularity as an astounding author after her series “Ghosts of Albion” (with Christopher Golden) recorded huge mainstream success. Since then, she has authored many other series of books as well as stand-alone novels. Born to a Jewish father and Baptist mother on January 8, 1977, in Birmingham, Alabama, Benson grew up attending a Reform temple in Alabama.
As a child, she studies arts and frequently performed in theaters and in the Birmingham Children’s Ballet. Her family then moved to Florida so that she could pursue acting opportunities. While there, she landed a role in an unsold TV series called Kids’ News. The flopped series forced the family to move to Los Angeles in 1992 where Benson’s acting career would flourish soon after. She slowly developed from a mere actress and started taking up production and script writing roles. That is arguably one of the major contributing factors to her writing career.
Benson debuted her writing career with the acclaimed series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” (2003) and “Ghosts of Albion” (2004); both of which she co-authored with Christopher Golden. Since then, she has authored so many other books; some of which are progressive series while others are stand-alone novels. Despite her undoubtedly amazing ability to make every book appealing, some have managed to gain more preference among her audience than others. Perhaps her most popular work is the Calliope Reaper-Jones series.
As its name suggests, the series revolves around Calliope Reaper-Jones, better known to her friends as Callie. The young woman lives in New York City and dreams of a career in the fashion industry. Currently, she has limited opportunities and so she has to settle for being an executive assistant and then work her way to her dream job. Interesting as that sounds, it is not the intriguing part of the series because, in this world, Death is managed pretty much like a corporation.
Callie’s father is Death, the President and CEO of Death INC. Despite his vision for her, Callie is desperate to be her own person and not follow her father into the family business. All she wants is a normal life and she is willing to do anything to get that; including the use of a forgetting charm. But she soon discovers that nothing comes easy and every choice has consequences.
The first novel of the series is “Death’s Daughter”. First published in January 2009, the book introduces Callie; a young girl living a quiet life. But that is about to change dramatically as she learns that her father and older sister (Thalia) have been kidnapped. She soon discovers that she is the only one who can protect her mother and Clio, her younger sister as well as rescue her father and older sister. To do so, she has to do the one thing that she doesn’t want – take over her father’s position in the family business. But the task is not a walk in the park. First, she must recover three items before the Devil’s protégé seizes them. Amidst all the deities, demons and magic, Callie finds help from Jarvis, her father’s trusted assistant. Now they have to go to Hell and back – literally!
The second book of the series did not disappoint either. Titled “Cat’s Claw”, the novel was first published in January 2010. In this exciting installment, Callie has made peace with her family. However, she is still determined to make it on her own in New York City. But Cerberus, the three-headed guard of the North Gate of Hell will have none of that. He has a pretty “simple” task for Callie – to retrieve Senemut’s death record. Senemut was an architect in ancient Egypt. The task sounds simple particularly because Callie’s father is Death. Backed by her lieutenant Jarvis, Callie heads out to find the record. But as usual, things don’t always go as planned. They soon learn that it is being kept in Purgatory and now they have to encounter a bunch of mythological greats and spend some time in Purgatory.
There is no doubt Amber Benson excels in authorship as well as creativity. That is why some of her works have been made into films and other forms of art and entertainment. Her most adapted work is arguably “Ghosts of Albion” which she co-created with Christopher Golden. It consists of writings that were made into films, computer animations, audio books, online movies, and games. Set in England, the series follows the lives of two siblings, William and Tamara Swift. The two find themselves in a tricky situation as they are forced to take over their father’s role as Albion’s protector. Albion is Britain’s mystical spirit and their father’s untimely death (slaughtered before their eyes) leaves it exposed to danger. So now they have to ensure it is protected by all means.
Substantial parts of the series are available in paper book, text, Macromedia Flash movie, and online. Most of them can be accessed from BBC’s website. In 2007, a quick start role-playing game of the same was released and a year later the PDF version was published. In 2011, the print version was released. Amber Benson (alongside Christopher Golden) was the primary writer of all the mentioned works.
Apart from writing, Amber Benson is also known to be a prominent actress. She started acting when she was only 14 but her big break came when she started to star in the TV series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” as Tara Maclay. Benson has also written movie scripts for a number of films. The most notable is probably the 2010 comedy film “Drones”. Her interest and passion in film led her to start her own production company called Benson Entertainment. She is also a very talented singer and has performed a number of musicals. In 2008, she was featured in an advertisement that promoted Barrack Obama’s campaign.
Despite all her other achievements and accomplishments, it is safe to say that Amber Benson has excelled in art and entertainment more than in any other field. Her novels are simply amazing. She explores interesting themes and uses exciting characters to bring her stories to life. That is the case for all her book series as well as stand-alone novels. If you haven’t read all her work then we highly recommend that you do so; especially if you love fiction.
