Best known for the White Trash Zombie and Kira Gillan series, Diana Rowland is a critically acclaimed urban fantasy writer. During the early stages of her life, Diana has worked as a blackjack dealer, a bartender, a pit boss, a detective, street cop, a crime scene investigator, computer forensics specialist and a morgue assistant. Diana has a black belt in Karate and won the marksmanship award while in the police academy. Currently, Diana lives with her spouse and daughter in South Carolina. In the year 2005, Rowland took the first place in the 3rd quater of Writers of the Future contest. This was Diana’s first time competing in the contest.

In the year 2011, Rowland was nominated for RT Reviewers Award for the Best Urban protagonist. Angel Crawford from the book My life as a White Trash Zombie was again the reason why Diana received another nomination. Two years later, Rowland once again received another nomination for the Best Urban Fantasy world building. This time it was the Touch of the Demon.

Mark of the Demon

Mark of the Demon introduces the reader to one Kira Gilla. Apart from being a Police Detective, Kira is also a conjurer of demons. Kira is at risk of losing her powers and if she loses her power, she will also lose her life. She tries to fathom why she is losing her powers at that specific moment in her life. During a routine summoning, an angelic creature appears before her. She was hoping to catch a serial killer while using her powers. Never before in her life had she encountered such a beautiful and unspeakably powerful being.

However, is Kara going to be able to convince this being to assist her in stopping a serial killer who has already claimed the souls and lives of so many people? Known as the Symbol man, the serial killer has claimed more than 13 people so far. Initially, the city had believed the nightmare had ended but 3 years later on, the serial killer is back. Upon killing his victims, the Symbol man leaves markings on the victim’s body, to show that he is well versed with demonic lore. In the entire police force, Kara is the only person who can be able to put the Symbol Man behind bars, however, this is her very first case. As time goes, Kara is assigned with the case.

Though surprised, Kara is glad that the police boss decided to assign her with the case. Kara understands that these types of cases always have something to do with the arcane. The FBI eventually get involved with the case thus a task force is created. Special Agents Zack Garner and Ryan Kristoff are also assigned to work alongside Kara. From the very beginning, Kara feels that she is attracted to Ryan. While summoning Rhyzikal, a link was created between him and Kara and now he is visiting her in her dreams in turn making the dreams realistic and vivid.

She likes those visits and she cannot deny it. At the same time, she still is very confused. She understands that this demon wants something from, though she cannot quite figure out what it is. With that being said, the entire storyline is absolutely amazing. The serial killer plot has been exceptionally created with several twists and turns and numerous red herrings brilliantly woven into the storyline. It is filled with demon language, demon names and other demon shenanigans. It is also exceedingly possible to follow the clues that the author leaves behind. The book builds up slowly but eventually it picks up.

Blood of the Demon

This is the second installment in this series and Kara takes things to a new level. The most unique aspect about this book is the fact that Diana did not make the main character exceedingly powerful unlike other urban fantasies books. After all the proceedings of the last book, Kara is still digesting what had happened. Kara has a rather uncertain connection with the demon Rhyzakahl. She has several questions about Ryan while her aunt is in a comma. It is only been a few weeks and Kara must now return to work. This time, there is a questionable murder suicide case which involves a police officer.

Kara needs more time to figure out how she is going to return her aunts spirit back into her body. Additionally, she also needs more time to solve arcane related cases. This time she has to solve all these cases without the assistance of her mentor. What should a girl do without seeking the a little demon knowledge? However, when it comes to demons, there is always a price to pay. Kara has to establish whether Rhyzakahl is worth the price.

Secrets of the Demon

Secret of the demon starts out peaceful enough as a stalker threat against a widely known musician becomes exceedingly complicated when it is discovered that the stalker is non-human. Bodies eventually begin to pile up and from the look of things they are all connected. However, the arcane forces used in the attacks are beyond Kara’s experience or knowledge. Thus, she has both a magical and mortal mystery to solve. Additionally, she also has to manage all this while conducting negotiations about the problems of the justice system.

Kara still continues with her mysterious relationship with Rhyzkahl and this time she is a summoner. The world that Diana creates is still fascinating, just like the one in the first installment. There are different demons, different ways of wielding the arcane and different demons, thus as a reader you can be able to see how this could work in so many different ways and angles. After all the time that Kara spent feeling guilty about her relationship with the demon Rhyzkhal, Kara finally decides to work it through. The great thing about this book is how Diana has managed to portray women. They are not only intelligent, but also exceedingly fun, independent, snarky, imperfect and very capable. This is a great read and highly recommended.
