Julie Smith is one of the popular novelists from America who likes to write her novels based on the young adult, paranormal, and mystery genres. Till now, she has successfully written a total of 20 mystery books and a few short stories. Author Smith has received the Edgar Award in the category of the Best Novel in the year 1991 for her 6th novel titled ‘New Orleans Mourning’. She was born on November 25, 1944, in Annapolis, Maryland, The United States. But, Smith spent most of her growing years in Savannah, Georgia. Author Smith went on to complete her graduation from the Mississippi University in the year 1965. After that, she started working as a journalist and continued with this profession for a period of 16 years. Initially, she began working as a reporter for the Times Picayune in New Orleans. Then, author Smith shifted to the San Francisco Chronicle. While working for this news agency, Smith became the first woman after the Second World War to get hired for the newsroom. For the next 10 years of her journalism career, Smith worked as a court and general assignment reporter. Later, she went on to work for the Santa Barbara News Press as a catalogue and advertising copywriter for the Banana Republic.
The next job of author Smith was working as a public information officer for the District Attorney of San Francisco. In the year 1979, Smith decided to quit her journalist career in order to start a freelance editing and writing firm called as the ‘Invisible Ink’. She was supported by a few other aspiring writers of fiction at the time of laying the foundation of this firm. One among them was author Marcia Muller. Eventually, author Smith was able to write and publish her debut novel in the year 1982. Then in the year 1991, she became the first woman in America to win the Edgar Award in the category of the ‘Best Novel’ since the year 1956. As of today, author Smith lives in Fauborg Marigny section in New Orleans. In the year 2006, she founded a website called Writerstrack.com, which consists of a writing instruction course carried out through conference calls. This was later changed into an ebook by her known as ‘Writing Your Way’. Then in the year 2010, author Smith laid down the foundation of her own publishing company called as ‘booksBnimble’. This company mainly focuses on the ebooks which are video-enhanced. Nine out of the twenty mystery novels that author Smith has written are based on the life of a female cop in the New Orleans police department known as Skip Langdon.
The next five are based on a San Francisco lawyer called Rebecca Schwartz, and 2 are about a struggling author of mystery novels named Paul McDonald. Four other mystery novels written by author Smith revolve around the life of a private eye named Talba Wallis, who is depicted by her as having multiple names, a smoking computing computer, and a poetic license. He is shown as working with a veteran private investigator named Eddie Valentino. In one of the novels titled ‘Bad Girl School’, Smith has described a psychic teenage burglar with pink hair. He is known as Reno and gets hired by a psychotic and telepathic cat for carrying out a job that includes a time travel to an old city called Mayan. Author Smith has said that she always knew that she wanted to become a writer from the age of 7. By the age of 12, she became so much fond of mystery books that she decided to become a mystery writer. When she became 13 years old, she was quite desperate to publish her debut novel and win the Edgar Award. Instead, she ended up working as a journalist after graduating. She said that she took this step in order to earn her living until the time she had the courage to try her hand at writing.
The Skip Langdon series written by author Julie Smith is comprised of 10 books in total. The first book of this series was published under the title ‘New Orleans Mourning’. It was released by the Fawcett publishers in the year 1990. Author Smith has done the setting of the story of this book in New Orleans, Louisiana, The United States. At the beginning of the book, it is depicted that it is the time for Mardi Gras in New Orleans. On this occasion, a socialite and civic leader named Chauncy St. Amant gets crowned as the King of Carnival, known as Rex. But, the glorious day comes to a bloody and abrupt end when he gets gunned down by a parade-goer in the dress of Dolly Parton. After that, questions begin to make rounds whether St. Amant’s daughter Marcelle is the one who killed him or it was his mistreated and homosexual son named Henry. Suspicion is also raised on his alcoholic wife named Bitty. It was then understood that the king had numerous enemies and one of them had played his part. Skip Langdon gets introduced into the plot as a rookie cop and a current cynic from the Uptown crowd. She gets indulged in scouring each and every street in New Orleans for finding some clues. Skip Langdon interviews a number of revelers and some street people named Hinky, Jo Jo, and Cookie in order to obtain even a little information for getting closer to the killer. In the end, she becomes successful in unraveling a tangled web of ancient secrets and brooding clues which posed danger even to her own life.
One of the other books in the series was published under the title ‘During Before Facebook’. It was released by the bookBnimble publishing house in the year 1994. When the story of this book begins, it is shown that Mark Zuckerberg was 10 years old in the year 1994 when author author Smith published this book. At that time, the Internet had just arrived onto the scene. But, no one had the idea that it could go on to become a dangerous thing. During the nineties, a website similar to Facebook was in operation. It was known as ‘Town’. A 20 year old boy named Geoff Kavanagh posts about witnessing the murder of his father on this social site. It appears that he should have not done this because a number of other users registered on the social site knew many things about his family that he did not even suspect. And after Geoff dies untimely, a number of old skeletons begin to surface. Due to the dedicated works of Skip Langdon, the police department was able to know about the secret murders taking place in the city. Langdon then becomes successful in finding the mother of Geoff, who did not seem to have any interest in knowing about the fatal death of her son. Then, it turns out that Geoff’s mother was the only one and post too had gone viral on the social site. Many people began to make theories and turned into cyber detectives for putting forward their own ideas about the death of Geoff and his father.
