Forty Years in Canada: A Memoir(2006)Description / Buy at Amazon

Jack Whyte was a popular novelist of the historical fiction, fantasy, and science fiction genres. He was of Scottish-Canadian descent and was born on January 01, 1939, in Johnstone, Renfrewshire, Scotland, UK. He passed away in February 2021.

Mr. Whyte spent his growing-up years in Scotland. After completing his education and before going on to become a noteworthy author of the historical fiction genre, he moved to Canada in search of employment. His first job was English teacher in a high school in Canada for one year, and then he shifted his focus towards writing, acting, music.

His most popular work is a series of historical books that retell the stories of King Arthur, set against the backdrop of Roman Britain. His depiction of the legend of King Arthur uses magic to explain how he ascended to the throne and gained power throughout Europe. The main plots rely on historical aspects of post-Roman Britain, with the help of some artistic license.

Whyte incorporated traditional Arthurian events, places, and names, in Latin or Gaelic form, along with numerous historical figures’ names as the possible basis of the original legend of King Arthur. Many critics believe that the version of history described by Mr. Whyte is actually the true story that has been distorted and changed somewhat over the years.

In addition to historical fiction in his writing career, Jack Whyte also served as the bard in the official The Calgary Highlanders. He even performed a few tracks of song and poetry on the recording of the 1990 Regimental Drums and Pipes of The Calgary Highlanders known as the Eighty Years of Glory.

The Camulod Chronicles series consists of 9 books in total, published between 1992 and 2004. One of the books in the series, entitled Uther, serves as companion to the initial 6 books in the series, whereas the last couple of books constitute a miniseries called The Golden Eagle.

The Skystone was the first book in The Camulod Chronicles Series. The story is set between the first invasion of the Hadrian’s Wall and the days of the legendary King Arthur. The main character of the book is Publius Varrus, who was the last legionnaire of Britain. He is depicted as a common man having some aristocratic friends. Overall, the novel proves to be a fine description of Roman history and shows the details of everyday life during the 4th century Britain.

The Singing Sword is the second book in the Camulod Chronicles series. This story features Arthur’s great grandfather, Publius Varrus, as he marks the boundaries of the reborn empire with bloodshed. It also features Luceiia, Publius’ wife, who has a strong passion for honor and law. The great night of the Dark Ages falls over Roman Britain and these two will fight to build a stronghold of law and learning that will become the great city of Camelot long after their deaths.

The Eagles’ Brood is the third book in the Camulod Chronicles series. The story continues the saga and features the leader of the Colony known as Merlyn. Cauis Merlyn Britannicus is someone that everyone looks up to and looks to for guidance and leadership. Merlyn’s dedication is to spreading the influence of Roman culture beyond the borders. Uther Pendragon, a man who will one day father the legendary Arthur, is Merlyn’s cousin. He is a tireless warrior and helps to keep the Colony safe. The two are inseparable until a crime drives a wedge between them. A wedge that if not prepared could threaten the entire nation.

Whyte is also the author of The Guardians series of books. The series focuses on the great hero of the Scottish Wars, William Wallace, the inspiration for the Mel Gibson movie Braveheart. On the morning of August 24th, 1305 in a London prison, William Wallace awaits his hanging. After his hang he will be drawn and quartered, a manner of revenge by the English. Wallace is visited in his cell by a Scottish priest who is here to listen to Wallace’s last confession. Wallace tells his story from the beginning and the many lives that he has lived.

Robert the Bruce is the second book in The Guardians series. Robert the Bruce, or Robert I, was one of the great kings of Scotland and a famous warrior. He lead the people in the Wars of Scottish Independence during the middle ages against the Kingdom of England. His reign allowed for Scotland to become an independent nation and he is one of the great heroes of Scotland. It wasn’t an easy road for him and this book chronicles his rise, culminating with the singing of the Treaty of Edinburgh-Northampton, which recognized Scotland as an independent kingdom and Bruce as its king.

Whyte also penned the Templar series which begins with Knights of the Black and White. The Order is a medieval secret society which unites the noble families. Sir Hugh de Payens is a brother of the the Order, but the First Crusade has left him a broken man and he’s since dedicated his life to God. However, the Order has other ideas for him. They want him to uncover a deadly secret that is threatening the Church.

The Templar series continues with Standard of Honor. Richard the Lionheart asks Sir Henry St. Clair, an Order member, to join his army and the fight to free the Holy Land. Sir Henry is reluctant, but agrees. The many intrigues of the Crusade leaders will make things complicated as they bring the Henry’s family and the Order to the edge of disaster.

I am finishing the last two books he wrote- the guardian series. I now have all of the three series- and am unwilling to part with them. It took me a long time to procure them all. I love the way he has taken known facts and ‘retold” stories and tied them together, giving a much more believable history to middle ages to England and Scotland. I wish he had written more, he will be missed.

Did Mr. Whyte only have time to write the Burning Stone because it looked as if it could have been a three novel set or more? Mr. Jack Whyte was a great write and he will be missed. His Scottish ancestry and knowledge always made feel like I was there. My condolences to Mrs. Bevery Whyte, I still will read his books at least once a year and I am looking for the Hard cover First Editions to pass on to my children. Prosper and Long.Life Mrs. Beverly Whyte.
    Sincerely,

I have just finished The Eagle and I was so looking forward to have more content on Arthur. Although Lancelot is a great character. When will Whyte publish a book which brings us in more intimacy with Arthur !!??

I am enjoying Jack Whyte’s books…but the numerous overlap in titles confuse me. Also I don’t see The Burning Stone in your list.
