An American author of much repute, the crime and mystery novelist David L. Lindsey is a highly regarded writer of the thriller genre, with well over fourteen novels to his name so far and counting, as well as a career spanning over thirty years so far. With a big screen adaptation of his 1990 thriller novel Mercy, he is no stranger to the cinema either, with a 2000 film thriller adaptation of the same name. A master of his genre and seen as being the person to look to for a great example of the genre, his ability in weaving both suspense and intrigue together remains unsurpassed.
Early and Personal Life
Born on the sixth of November in 1944, David L. Lindsey was brought up in the area of Kingsville in Texas, spending a large portion of his childhood in the vicinity of the Rio Grand Valley, as well as West Texas, staying nearby San Angelo. During this time he developed a strong passion for writing and reading, as he gained a talent for all things literature, a talent which he went on to nurture in the intervening years to come. It was also his upbringing that provided him with the background required to inform his material and further build upon it, as he crafted his characters gaining a unique insight into human nature.
Later attending the North Texas State University he went on to graduate with a degree in English and literature, something which allowed him to apply an academic level of understanding to his work, as he sought to develop his passion for writing even further. This gave him the tools necessary for better establishing his craft, as he built the foundations for what was to be his future writing career that was to subsequently follow. It also allowed him to hone and refine his voice, as he discovered his love of suspense and keeping the reader hooked and engaged with his characters throughout the narrative.
Moving to Austin in Texas in 1970, he has lived there to this present day, but it was during the seventies that he became a book editor within a number of the smaller publishing houses throughout the city of Austin, during which time he even started his publishing house named Heidelberg Publishers for a period of time. All of this enabled him to gain some hands-on experience in the field, building his craft, despite being initially afraid to take the leap into writing full-time himself due to financial worries. Then, after his wife urged him to give it a try, he finally went for it in 1980 and soon became a full-time writer himself using everything he had learned up until that point.
Years later in 1994 he had achieved the success he was looking for, as he then had well over two million books put into print at that time, along with a number of translations too. Still writing to this present day he continues to live in Austin in Texas where he resides with his wife Joyce Lindsey and still maintain his status as a full-time writer. With plenty more books set to be released in the near future, there is no shortage of titles, as it looks like he has no plans to stop any time soon.
Writing Career
Bringing out his initial two novels in the year of 1983, David L. Lindsey arrived on the literary scene with the titles A Cold Mind along with Black Gold, Red Death. It was A Cold Mind though that first introduced his readers to one of his ongoing protagonists in the form of Stuart Haydon the Houston based homicide detective. During his time as a writer he would also write under pseudonym Paul Harper as well, creating an impressive and extensive body of work and material over the years.
Not just gaining commercial success though, he would also manage to gain critical acclaim as well, gaining a number of awards, as he was respected by both his peers and contemporaries. Largely focusing on crime and mystery, he would also turn his hand to spy novels on occasion too, as he managed to branch out widening his audience more and more in the process. As his writing career grows from strength-to-strength, he will continue to write, as it appears he has a lot more books planned for release on the horizon.
Black Gold, Red Death
Originally published on the 12th of March in 1983, this was to be the book that first introduced readers to the work of David L. Lindsey as an author on the literary scene. Setting up a tone of high-stakes and intrigue, it immediately dived into the world of crime and mystery, keeping his readers constantly guessing right until the very end. It also helped to establish his style and tone and who he was, along with the overall ambiance of his work to follow.
Telling the story of the protagonist Martin Gallagher, it sees him as a San Antonio newspaper reporter who has lived a pretty mundane life with no real threat of danger. That is when he discover that his half-sister called Stella is actually a leader who is secretly running a Mexican revolutionary movement, but she now needs his assistance. Attempting to help her in her time of need he tries to deliver a cache of top secret documents, only to come up against the ruthless and dangerous assassin called Tony Sleep. Will he be able to save his sister, or will she save him? Can he keep himself alive to find out? What will become of the black gold, red death?
The Face of the Assassin
First published in 2004, this was initially published through the Grand Central Publishing label, showing a clear development from his earlier work. Continuing in the same style and tone, it manages to provide his readers more of what they have now come to expect from him as an author over the many years of his now firmly grounded career. Telling the story of Paul Bern, a forensic expert who one reconstructs his own face from a skull that’s handed to him by a mysterious woman. This then leads him down the path as deals with a whole host of different issues, such as the war on drugs, blackmail and his own innate ability for violence. What will become of him as he looks into the face of the assassin?
