About W.E.B. Griffin:

William Edmund Butterworth III, more popularly known as W.E.B. Griffin, was an American writer known for his military and detection novels. He was born on November 10, 1929 and was raised in the cities of New York and Philadelphia.

He has written more than thirty novels, majority of which listed in the Best-selling lists of The-Wall-Street-Journal, The New York and other distinguished lists. He passed away on February 12th, 2019. He wrote over 130 novels of fiction and non fiction some of which were published under his thirteen other pseudonyms. All in all, he has created six series of novels.

Currently, he has fifty million books circulating the market, majority of which are recognized for their historical credibility and dedication to the servicemen of the US-Army, both and late and of the present. He is noted for saying, “Nothing honors him more than a cop, veteran, or serviceman telling him that they enjoy reading his books,”

Personal Life

Griffin was raised by his Pennsylvanian Dutch mother, leading him to learning German which proved very useful in his military-career. On the other hand, Griffin’s father was a Colonel in the Húsares de Pueyrredon.

Military Life

In 1946, Griffin enlisted in the US-Army. After a brief training on counter-intelligence tactics in Fort Holabird in Maryland, he was stationed to the Army-of-Occupation in Germany. After his brief stint in Germany as staff of Major-General I.D. White, commander-of-the-U.S. Constabulary, he entered Phillips-University in Marburg-an-der Lahn, Germany.

The Korean War, however, interrupted his studies and was recalled to-serve as an official-Army war correspondent. He was then transferred as public-information-officer for U.S. X Corps. After he was released from service, he was awarded with the Combat-Infantryman-Badge and posted in the U.S.-Army Signal-Aviation Test and Support Activity as the Chief-of-the-Publications Division at Fort-Rucker, Alabama.

While having a very successful career in fiction writing, he has maintained his status as a veteran, garnering awards from different award-giving bodies in recognition of his contribution to the US military service. He was awarded with Honorary-Doctoral degrees by Troy-State-University in Alabama and Norwich University, the country’ premier military school.

In the year 1991, he was awarded The-Brigadier-General Robert L. Dening Memorial-Distinguished Service-Award of the U.S. Marine Corps Combat Correspondents-Association, while in the year 1999, he was recognized for his excellent contribution to military media and was given the Veterans-of-Foreign-Wars News-Media-Award.

Mr. Griffin was a member of the-Veterans-of-Foreign Wars Special Operations Association, the Army-Aviation-Association, the Armor Association, the American Legion and the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) Society.

Writing Career

While working as the Chief of Publications at Fort Rucker, Griffin started writing his first three novels, all of which become successful and was sold quickly. This led him to pursue his writing career full-time, leaving his job as Chief of Publications.

On 1982, he released The Lieutenants, the first in the “Brotherhood-of-War” series. This series eventually became one of Griffin’s most successful. The Brotherhood-of-War series is written in an almost epic format, recalling many scenes from the World War 2 and other previous wars like the Korean War, the Lebanese Conflict, the Vietnam War, among others.

The series introduces Griffin’s anecdotal, dramatic, yet intense and unsentimental writing style which separated him from most war anthologists and writers. Most importantly, it is noted for its deliberate attention to details not necessarily involving combat, but rather the psychological changes of the characters and the dramatic highs and lows of the times.

The series was continued with The Captains in (1982), The Majors in (1983), The Colonels in (1983), The Berets in (1985), The Generals in (1986), The New Breed in (1987), The Aviators in (1988) and finally concluding with Special Ops published on the year 2001. While the Brotherhood-of-War series was ongoing, Griffin also embarked on another series, the “Men at War” series, taking on the perspectives of the more ‘common’ servicemen.

The series started with The Last Heroes, originally titled as In The Line of Duty with the pseudonym of Alex Baldwin), released on 1984. It continued with The Secret Warriors in (1985), The Soldier Spies in (1986), and The Fighting Agents in (1989).

All were published under Griffin’s Alex Baldwin pseudonym. The “Corps Series” was launched with the Book I of the series, Semper Fi. The Corps Series marked a shift in Griffin’s writing, this time focusing on the action element of plot and the world-wide epic picture of the war.

The series is one of the longest of Griffin’s series, continuing up to 10 installments, namely Call to Arms in (1987), Counterattack in (1990), Battleground in (1991), Line of Fire in (1992), Close Combat in (1993), Behind the Lines in (1996), In Danger’s Path in (1999), Under Fire in (2002) and Retreat, Hell! in (2004).

This fascination with fast-paced storytelling came to one of Griffin’s new take on the genre. Griffin’s third series “The Badge of Honor” series, shifts from historical military fiction into police action-drama. The novel Men in Blue in (1988) kickstarted the series, followed by Special Operations in (1989), The Victim in (1991), The Witness in (1992), The Assassin in (1993), The Murderers in (1994),and The Investigator and Final Justice in (2003) which is the last book of the series which Griffin wrote solo.

On 2004, Griffin launched his “Presidential Agent Series” with By Order of the President, veering away from his trademark docu-drama style and realistic depictions of wartime combat. The “Presidential Agent Series” typified Griffin’s attempt to keep with the state of current events and writing about homeland security and covert operations.

On 2007, Griffin’s son, William E. Butterworth IV, collaborated with his father in writing Book V of the Men of War Series, The Saboteurs, eventually continuing as co-author in other Griffin series such as the “Badge of Honor series,” in the books The Traffickers in (2009), The Vigilantes in (2010) and The Last Witness in (August 2013), the “ Honor Bound ” series (Death and Honor in (2008), The Honor of Spies in (2009), Victory and Honor in (2011), Empire and Honor in (2012), and the “ Presidential Agent ” series in The Outlaws in (2010), Covert Warriors in (2011), and lastly the Hazardous Duty in the year (2013).

   What was the book/ series were the main character lived in Africa with his family, he came back to the USA for the draft. His family had a air charter business, and they got trapped during a revolt?

     That’s “The New Breed”, book 7 in the Brotherhood of War series.
     The main character is Jack Portet. Takes place in the early ’60’s during the Simba revolt.

   …now that I’ve read his biography all the novels and characters make more sense…I’ve read all of his books under the Griffin pseudonym – now I need to find the other…the Corps series was wrapped up in ‘Retreat Hell’…my retired Marine major buddy got me hooked on Griffin’s books and I in turn have passed them on to other voracious readers..I’m glad I stumbled onto this site!!!

   I would like to know the actual name of the
   general given the pseudonym Ralph Howe in the
   Corps volume “Under Fire”. Also what was
   Griffin’s considered opinion of Truman as a
   commander-in-chief after he relieved MacArthur?
   In the two books covering the Korean war, he
   seems to have a positive opinion of Truman as a
   political leader. Was Griffin a registered
   Democrat(nowadays Demoncrat) Republican or
   Independent, or maybe just apolitical and so
   not registered in any category.
   Since he seems to have written his books that I
   have read by collecting information about the
   experiences of real people in the time & places
   about which he wants to write, then combining
   this collection with his own creative plot and
   dialogue to produce a fascinating narrative, I
   can’t help wondering whether this was also true
   for the Presidential Agent series, especially
   the volume in which the president was willing
   to yield to the threat of biological warfare if
   he did not turn Castillo over to the Russians.
   If he wrote this volume after Obama became
   president, I can easily imagine Obama doing
   this, and hope that it did not actually happen
   and was leaked to Griffin by some insider, as
   happened with material sent to him anonymously
   about the plan to deal with Evans Carlson,
   which he discussed in the preface to volume II
   of The Corps.

     I am a retired SCPO, Navy who served in a combat unit as a Hospital Corpsman imbeded with the Marines. I started reading W.E.B. when there were only six Brotherhood of War books in publication. I have read about 5 or 6 series, with The Corps as my favorite, having listened to it 2 times and read it 3. Thank you for many, many hours of enjoyment.
