Glen Cook was born in New York City in 1944. His love for writing began when he was in grade school and high school, writing occasional articles for his school’s newspaper. After High School, Glen enlisted in the US Navy and left later to join college.
He worked his way through college, leaving him with a little time for writing. Later on, he started working for the General Motors. It was at this time when he started writing earnestly. During this time, he wrote as many as three books a year.
Cook is the brains behind The Chronicles of a Black Company. The series follows an elite mercenary unit through its adventures for several decades of its history. The series was such a success that it went on to become a cult classic, especially among service men and ex-service men. Apart from The Black Company series, Glen Cook is also known for his Garret P.I series. The Garret P.I Chronicles is based on the haphazard adventures of a Garret. A hard-boiled city detective. He is also the author of the Dread Empire series.
Currently, Cook has retired from his job at General Motors. He lives with his wife and children in St. Luis Missouri. He has the time to devote himself into his writing career, but he feels he was more productive while working at General Motors.
The Black Company Series Review.
The Black company series is based on the adventures of the Black Company, Lat of the free companies of Khatovar, the remaining company of the 12 true companies. The company is an elite mercenary force that was once numbered in thousands, but only a couple of hundreds are remaining.
In the Chronicles of The Black Company, Glen Cook managed to single-handedly manage to change the face of fantasy novels.
The storyline of the entire series is captivating. Cook draws his readers into an action-packed world, free with death. Unlike many books that death is the forefront of the entire book.
Let’s look at some books in The Chronicles of Black Company.
1. 1. The Black Company.
The black company tells us a fast-paced story of the Black Company. The Black company is the last of the Free Companies of Khatovar, the only company left off the Twelve True Companies.
The Black company is an elite mercenary force. The force was once numbered in thousands, but currently, only a couple of hundreds are remaining.
In this book, Glen Cook draws us into a fast paced, action packed world immediately you open the first pages. The company is dragged from one conflict to another. This happens honorably and dishonorably. Nobody can tell whether the company is on the good or the evil side.
As the Black Company struggles for existence, its brought into the war between the rebels and the lady’s empire. They fight with Soulcatcher, who is one among the Ten Who Were Taken. But the Black Company cannot match the force of the rebels, they are pushed back until the last stand. The fight of the last stand is fought against the rebels and the circle of eighteen.
But nothing was in black and what, nothing was what it seemed. The mechanization between the Lady and the ten taken is about to destroy everything. Unless the Black Company steps in.
The story is narrated from the first person perspective of croaker, the companies historian, and physician. Croaker takes us deep into the companies history, tells us what makes them tick, the strength that makes them unstoppable and the honor they hold very dear in the hearts.
The characters in this book are very realistic. Even though they are lost early, the reactions to the loss are breathtaking.
The story is captivating with its fast-paced storytelling and gritty realism. The perspective from which the story is told is also quite interesting. The perspective of the Company’s analyst, recording the history of the company. The story telling perspective gives you the feeling that you are reading from Croaks account.
2. Shadow Lingers.
This is yet another exciting book from the Chronicles of The Black Company. The Shadow Lingers is based on the adventures of the Black Company. The Black company is the last of the Free Companies of Khatovar; the only company left off the Twelve True Companies, an elite group of mercenaries in the service of the supreme leader, the Lady.
The Black Company stands against the rebels, the Rebels of the White Rose. As a unit, they are tough men, proud to be honoring their contracts to serve the lady. But the lady is evil, but so are the rebels who claim to follow the white rose, a reincarnation of a heroine who died centuries ago.
During their clashes with the White Rose Rebels, the companies rescue a mute girl and give her shelter. Later, they discover that the mute girl was a reincarnation of the white rose. They must fight their way to the light and save their lives.
The Shadow Linger is a classic example of a literal masterpiece. It follows two distinct storylines. One narrated by Croaker, the chronicler of the company and the main narrator of the story and the second story is narrated in the third person. In the end, the two storylines are reconciled to give one breathtaking ending.
Cook writes his characters well. They are engaging, fun and very capable. They are full of surprises. It’s very interesting to watch as some members of the company struggle with their peculiar honor, that only extends to members of the company and not outside it. Even though some or two characters get lost in the background, most of the stand out quite well and are very memorable.
The Chronicles of the Black company is one exciting read, full of suspense and intrigue. A must read for the lovers of dark fantasy.
The best thing about Glen Cook is that he knows how to tell his stories, how to make his characters memorable and how to ensure that the reader will be engaged until the last page of the series.
