M. R. Mathias is the author of several novels and short stories; all of which are fantasy. His stuff has been published independently, and it his work has sold well, some of which has made it’s way to number one on bestseller lists. He has created the “Dragoneers” series, “Wardstone” series, “Crimzon and Clover” series, and “The Legend of V. M.” series. His work has pushed him to make a name for himself, sell very well, and win some awards, all in a very short time. While in prison, serving time on a charge of minor drug possession, he wrote some full length novels by hand and read hundreds more. M. R. Mathias keeps to a strict regiment of writing three thousand words a day, which he developed after his stay in prison. He got clean after he got out, and has been ever since. Mathias has credited writing as his salvation, and what kept him going while locked up and kept in maximum security after getting into some fights. His stay in max security kept him in a cell for 23 hours per day. He writes movie reviews of new movies and posts them on social media. Mathias studied Humanity at University of Oklahoma.

The first book in the trilogy of “Wardstone” books, “The Sword & the Dragon” and “The Royal Dragoneers” was featured in a showcase done by a magazine that focused on indie releases in late 2010, and they both received a place on a top ten list of indie fantasy novels in 2010 by Fantasy Book Critic.

Mathias has also published a book called “The First Ten Steps” a book to help indie authors promote their books; it uses Mathias’s knowledge of self-promotion to help independent authors tread the dark waters and get their books in front of readers. He also helps other indie authors by posting about their books on social media, and puts together giveaways of Kindles that have indie books loaded onto them to help get buzz out there.

“Through the Wildwood” is the first book of “The Legend of V. M.” series. This novel has elements of romance (and erotica) in it. It even starts with a sex scene. After a half-Zythian bard named Vanx beds the daughter of the Duke of Highlake, her father puts him in chains. His wife sends the Duchess to rescue Vanx from his fate as a slave. All hell breaks loose due to the fact that the Duchess’s father has sent people to kill Vanx. The pair of people will have to go through the Wildwood and survive. Something that has not been done recently. They grow to love each other throughout the book.

Readers that liked the book enjoyed that it played with their imagination, it kept their attention, and hooked them in from the very first page of the book. They also liked that the book featured great character development, it was funny, and exciting. Some readers liked that the chapters started off with some funny limericks, the fact that the author does not shy away from talking about the sexual encounters found in the book in detail, and Mathias captures different guilds and races throughout the realm. Readers did not like that the book did not have much detail to it. While some felt that the book was leading up to certain things that never really happened and features a climax that requires readers to buy the next book in the series to see what happens next. Some readers felt like this was one single book being stretched out into several and contains fluff to make the story longer.

“Dragon Isle” is the second book of “The Legend of V. M.” series. Vanx, Trevin, Darbon, and Prince Russet (accompanied by the entire crew of the Sea Hawk) take a trip to Vanx’s homeland to find an old chum of Vanx to see if they know some wyrm lore so that they can get to Dragon Isle without incident. There are plans to put a sketchy plan in motion in a place called Dyntalla by two men named Duke and Coll Martin. A man named Quazar is holding the princess and keeping her alive with everything that he has.

Fans of this book enjoyed the characterization, the rising action, level of engagement that readers felt while reading, and the fact that they were unable to put down the book before finishing it. Fans also liked that there was more poetry at the beginning of each chapter, like in the first book. Some readers found the sex scenes unnecessary to the story and they were repulsed by them and they did not like the author’s use of the F word throughout the book. Some parts were thought to have no purpose in the book at all and were included in the book being forced into the book. One reader found that the book featured nothing but male characters, nothing but descriptions about the scenery found in the book (almost nothing about the people in the book), and the character development (the little that is here) was weak, making the book, at least to them, unfinishable.

“The Sword & the Dragon” is the first book in the “Wardstone” trilogy, and M. R. Mathias’s first ever novel. A powerful wizard kills the king, using poison, so that a prince whom the Wizard has under his thumb can succeed his father to start a war. A squire is required to go on the run to save his bacon with a powerful sword that was given to him by the now deceased monarch. A magic ring is found by two brothers and go on to be powerful enemies. A young witch takes a liking to one of the brothers after he agrees to steal something for her father. He just happens to be the man who killed the king to start a war (the Wizard of Westland). These characters (and more) are all on the same course to get to the same place. The Witch Queen’s Palace where a very magical substance known as the Wardstone is located and forms the bedrock. The book starts off with story lines that have been done before, but this time, with a fresh take on it.
