The Constable Molly Smith novels are a series of mysteries written by the well-known Canadian author, Vicki Delany. All the novels of the series are set in the fictional town of Trafalgar in British Columbia, thinly disguised as Nelson, BC.
Constable Third Class Molly Smith spends most of her time on patrol around town, checking the streets and alleys for crime. As a patrol officer, Molly naturally asks questions and investigates, and her knowledge helps detectives track down and catch criminals. She seems to love her job very much.
In the beginning of the series, she finds trouble brewing in the bucolic mountain town of Trafalgar, British Columbia, where she lives and is stationed as a police officer. A Vietnam War draft dodger, who was American, had left money and land to the town. There is one caveat though, the town must use the funds to honor draft dodgers by building a garden.
The bequest has torn the close-knit, peaceful town apart. Then the body of a leading garden opponent is found in an alley, dead from a blow to the head.
Constable Molly Smith is assigned to assist veteran Detective Sergeant John Winters in the investigation, but Winters does not want the rookie’s help. Molly seems a bit overeager on her first assignment, but her character becomes more and more interesting as the series progresses.
The second novel of the Constable Molly Smith series, Valley of the Lost, was published in 2009 by Poisoned Pen Press. The dead body of a young woman is discovered in the bucolic and fictional mountain town of Trafalgar in British Columbia.
It is believed that the victim died of a heroin overdose. Her three-month-old baby boy was found lying beside her body.
Initially, the case appeared to be an easy one with nothing much to investigate, but restraint marks are discovered on the body of the victim, suggestive that her death might not have been completely due to a heroin overdose.
As Sergeant John Winters and Probationary Constable Molly Smith become involved in the ever-growing investigation of the life and death of the young woman, the case becomes increasingly personal for them. Only two things are known about the dead woman, that her first name was Ashley and that she had a three-month-old boy.
The baby boy is adopted by Molly’s mother, Lucky Smith, and it seems that the small boy is the only clue that can help solve the murder of his mother. In the meantime, John Winters’s wife, Eliza, considers accepting a modeling contract with the same resort development that has been ripping the close-knit community apart.
Molly Smith and John Winters begin to suspect that the controversial resort project may have forced a member of the community to commit murder. Soon, they will discover some disturbing and unexpected truths related to the murder of the young woman and the seemingly quiet community of Trafalgar.
Another earlier novel in the Constable Molly Smith series is Negative Image, published in 2010 by Poisoned Pen Press. The plot of this novel is once again set in the fictional town of Trafalgar, British Columbia, and continues to feature the main characters of John Winters, Molly Smith, and Lucky Smith.
In the opening sequence, Trafalgar is shaking off a long, hard winter. A the famous photographer, Rudolph Steiner, arrives in town to do a feature on mountain tourism. He is accompanied by his sexy young wife and assistant.
Steiner has another reason for coming to Trafalgar. He wants to reconnect with the woman who had left him 25 years ago to marry another man.
Eliza was young, naive, beautiful, and an internationally known supermodel 25 years ago. Today, she is married to Sergeant John Winters. She is no longer young and naive as before, but she is still very beautiful.
Soon, Rudolph Steiner is found dead in his luxury hotel room, shot in the back of the head. Suspicion quickly falls on Eliza Winters. John Winters finds himself caught in the difficult dilemma of loyalty to his wife or his job.
As the investigation begins and the past lives of Eliza and Steiner are studied, Winters slowly comes to realize that he doesn’t know his wife of 25 years as well as he thought.
On the other hand, Molly Smith is embroiled in her own problems and is not able to help Sergeant Winters with the case. The peaceful town of Trafalgar is in an uproar due to a series of B&Es.
Molly’s boyfriend seems overprotective of her. Also, her every move is being tracked by a vengeful stalker. Molly Smith cannot even help her mother, Lucky Smith, when tragedy strikes her family.
