Evelyn James is a British crime writer known for writing historical mystery stories.

She has been longlisted for the Asham Award (2010) and has been a runner-up for the Rider Haggard Literary Award. Evelyn has had her writing featured in a variety of anthologies of short stories and has written for the Daily Mirror.

Evelyn is also known for writing the Clara Fitzgerald Mysteries series of fictional novels, which were also inspired by the author’s nonfiction work on World War I and Brighton society. She is the author of the Gentleman Detective series of novels as well as the novel Shadows on Maple Lane, which was released in 2024.

When she is not preoccupied with writing, she likes to take some time out to walk with her dogs up and down the East Anglia coast.

This ends up occurring in the form of Mrs. Wilton, an emotional widow who is very scatterbrained that thinks that her deceased husband will be able to guide her from beyond the grave to find lost treasure.

Clara takes on the case as she is drawn to it and goes against her better judgment in doing so. She hates people who take advantage of those who are in grief and thinks that is what a fake psychic is in the process of doing to Mrs. Wilton.

She understands the widow’s grief very well and wants to help, so Clara makes a promise that she will assist her. When matters take a turn for the worst, Clara finds that she has been accused of murder. Now she has the burden of proving her innocence, but the silver lining is that she might be able to help prove herself as a detective in the process.

This is an entertaining murder mystery series set in the past that will engage you as a reader and keep you entertained until the very end!
