Tamara Merrill is a published author.
She has always read a lot, and it didn’t have to be a book. If anything had words on it the author admitted that she read it, everything from historical markers to cereal boxes and graffiti. She also extended this to books and would read all types of books, ones that had jokes, fiction, nonfiction, dictionaries, encyclopedias. She says that the only exceptions were that she would not read directions for things and would not read cookbooks.
She reads every day and Tamara admits that she sometimes reads too much. However, she does live in a nice area for reading and is fortunate to live in Coronado, California because she can go outside and get some fresh air while reading.
Tamara enjoys writing every day. She also says that she can be distracted from the writing process by getting a coffee with friends, reading a good book, or taking a long walk on the beach. When she is busy working on a project, she says that she has written from ten in the morning to four in the afternoon and then might take a break. She can write again at night for a few hours when things are going well.
Tamara enjoys talking as well as telling stories. When she was younger, she read the Betsy and Tacy books when younger and liked the character Betsy, which inspired her to write. She had a short story published when she was nine years old in American Girl Magazine, which only reinforced her personal belief in herself when it came to writing and knew that she wanted to do it from then on.
She was a single mother and so found herself writing up things for work. This included tech manuals, grants, and articles revolving around information technology. In the sixties, seventies, and eighties she wrote short stories which were published in women’s magazines, got busy with life in the nineties, and has returned to writing since 2007.
The author enjoys writing short stories about mystery, murder, or family relationships. She has had her short stories published in various anthologies and magazines. One of these was awarded the 2019 San Diego Book Award in its category (Magic, Mystery, & Murder).
She likes traveling and takes time teaching in the adult education system. She is a painter and a quilter and enjoys most craft projects. She also is frequently in book clubs and speaks at other events related to books and likes painting.
Shadows In Our Bones is a historical fiction book from Tamara Merrill. The story is based on real events that happened with real people. It is about a racial incident that occurred in 1912 in Maine and the effects that it had on the descendants and society today. If you’ve been looking for an interesting new read, check this book out!
On two different coasts, through two different periods of time, these lives have come together and are being impacted forever. Racial prejudice, eugenics, religion, greed, societal forces and more all combine in a way that no one saw coming in the early 1900s in Maine on a small wooded island off of its coast.
The events that happened on Malaga Island don’t stay there and continue to go on through the years. The impact that they have is felt by many different people and in different ways.
Cora Lane is on vacation with her missionary parents in 1903 on Horse Island nearby. She is introduced to the Malaga Island community that the press has called degenerate half-breeds. The people that live there are overall poor and not educated well, but they are no more poor and no less educated than the families who are also living on the coast who are making it by clamming and fishing. However, the difference is that they are of mixed race, those being American Indian, African-American, and Portuguese.
Cora finds that the children of the island are interesting to her and she starts teaching them writing, reading, and math skills. She ends up being surprised to discover that the children are quick, intelligent, able to learn, and funny, and the color of their skin does not stop them from being so.
Cora takes on the responsibilities she is expected to as a woman of her own personal standing. At the same time, she starts advocating for everyone’s rights to be respected, educated, and ultimately allowed to vote.
It has been a century later, and college professor Georgia O’Brien is going up against the customs and beliefs of modern day that end up resulting in racial prejudice. The professor ends up being challenged by secrets that end up changing their views about who they are and what they think they believe, all as her mom fights to live against cancer.
The past never truly goes away. Based on real events and people that happened, this story covers what took place on Malaga Island and holds up a mirror to society at that time. An engaging nonfiction book that you won’t want to miss.
