Self-Portrait with Nothing is a 2022 novel from Aimee Pokwatka. If you are a fan of Fringe or Orphan Black or any interesting new work from a new voice in literature, check out this book that George Saunders called ‘deeply moving’ and that The New York Times called ‘tantalizing and elusive’.
Occasionally, being able to live our best lives may sometimes mean that we have to look at the imperfect one that we have and embrace it. A picture is sometimes able to paint a thousand words.
Pepper Rafferty was just a baby when she was abandoned on the front porch of the local vet. She was raised by two mothers who loved her very much, and now has moved on in adulthood to marriage. Her husband is named Ike, a man who is supportive and stable.
When Pepper was fifteen years old, she actually found out who her biological mother was. But she never told anyone that she had done so. This was not so much as to keep the secret or to protect the emotions of others but because of who her biological mother is.
That would be a woman named Ula Frost. She is a painter who is fairly reclusive and has been made famous for not only art but for her outlandish claims that the portraits she makes are able to summon the doppelganger of the subjects from parallel universes.
Pepper is researching all of the rumors and wants to find out whether the rumors are true. Could the painter actually be able to summon the universes? Is there a universe out there parallel to their own where she is able to take in love more, has done more, and is more confident? Maybe even one where her mother was able to decide that she wanted to keep her?
The rejection of her mother in this universe hurts too much. Pepper would love if there were another universe where they actually were able to be together. This bittersweet story will have you perhaps reaching for a tissue as you make your way to Aimee Pokwatka’s conclusion!
The Parliament is the second fictional book to come out from Aimee Pokwatka. If you have read the first book by this author and loved it or just want to read something interesting, check this book out!
This is the story of Madeleine Purdy, the main character who finds herself stuck in the library in her hometown. Things all of a sudden go wrong when thousands of owls suddenly make their way to the building.
They are going after anyone who is going outside. Now Madeleine has the task of trying to keep all of the students safe as well as giving them something to do and keeping them distracting as they all try to figure out what they are going to do with this issue.
They might just be able to find some help in the book The Silent Queen, a book from Mad’s childhood. There is not a whole lot of fresh water and food left, so the people in the library are going to have to race the clock to find a way out.
Whatever way they find out, they’ve got to do it fast, because the murderous owls seem to be sticking around. This is the story of sadness, opportunities gone by, hope, and courage, as well as scary beaks. Read The Parliament to find out what happens!
