Two sisters are kidnapped on an ordinary day in August in the afternoon. On the north-eastern edge of Russia on the shoreline, the siblings disappear without a clue. The weeks after are spent searching for them, and the weeks surely turn into months.
Even though the police investigate, they find nothing when they look into things. The disappearance has caused the close knit community to deeply feel the loss, and the women especially feel this loss as well as a sense of fear.
Set on Kamchatka, the Siberian peninsula, this is the story of one crime that takes the reader into a world with a variety of characters. The reader is taken to different beautiful vistas, from forests full of trees to tundra expanses, to tall volcanoes, to beautiful seas on the border of Alaska and Japan, further into a place that is complicated and beautiful, with longstanding ethnic and social tensions, where people from the outside are not trusted and likely to be accused more quickly of doing something wrong than a local.
This is the intensely written and suspenseful first novel from Julia Phillips, which will introduce the outsider to the bonds of community and family in a Russia that is completely unique. Find out what happens by picking up a copy of the book and seeing what happens along the way for yourself!

Elena and Sam are sisters, and together they have dreams of getting away from their everyday existence and having another life. They were born on a small island located off of the Washington coast, a place that they grew up together. They live with their mother and do everything that they can to try and survive.
Sam works on a ferry for long hours, watching the mainlanders get shuttled to their vacation homes. Elena works at the golf club bar tending. Together they are earning what they can, but it still isn’t enough to pay for things. It’s frustrating, as the sisters feel that their lives have limits.
Sam is on the boat one night when she thinks that she sees a bear in the channel, swimming in the water. She has no idea what it wants or where it would even be going. Then it shows up by their home. Sam is scared and thinks it’s a good time to depart from the island.
