This is a very funny comedy that is guaranteed to warm your heart. An administration worker somehow is able to get access to the private emails of her colleagues through some freak accident– and she also has access to their direct messages.
Then comes the moment of truth, where Natalie Sue can either pretend that she doesn’t have access to this information and quietly go about her day or she can do what she really wants to do, which is use the intelligence that she has access to in order to save her own job. This is a story that provides readers with plenty of laughs and entertainment along the way, and you may be particularly amused if you happen to work in an office (and know that you could use the extra resources to get ahead).
Jolene thinks that interacting with colleagues needs to begin and end with the official duties that she has working for Supershops, Inc. as an admin. But the coworkers that she has are really bad at their jobs and annoying on top of it to boot, so they don’t really understand why boundaries are so important.
Jolene knows that she needs something extra to survive so she has an outlet all ready to go. She lists all of her grievances with people in one long vent on email postscripts, and then alters the color of the text to become white so that people can’t see it and it’s then invisible. But when one of the secret messages that she has written gets exposed, it’s clear that sensitivity training led by Cliff the HR guy is going to be her punishment, as well as some strict email restrictions.
Then a mix-up down in IT somehow gives Jolene the access to all of the private emails and messages of her department. She has an inkling that the correct thing to do in this situation would be to report it immediately. But she also has a lot of curiosity and wants to know what her coworkers might be saying. It could be more information that could help her with her job.
Jolene is proven to be right when she finds out that layoffs are not far down the line. She also thinks that this might be the reason that her job gets saved. She has a simple plan. She wants to get the favor of her boss, then make a convincing argument to HR that she is the right type of material for Supershops, and then do what she can to beat out the others who might be competition against her.
However, she may just find out that as she goes deeper into the worlds of her coworkers, the walls that she has built up may ultimately come crumbling down. This may extend to Cliff, someone that Jolene knows she shouldn’t have feelings for. Now she has to decide whether she is finally ready to come out from the cubicle and into the world.
