Jane Aiken Hodge was a British writer born in America.
Jane was born on December 4, 1917, close to Cambridge, Massachusetts. She was the second child to Conrad Aiken and Jessie McDonald, her father a Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and his wife a writer. When she was just three years old, they moved to Great Britain. Her younger sister Joan was born with them in Rye, East Sussex. She would go on to become a novelist and writer of children’s books.
Her parents would end their marriage in 1929. Jane would go to Somerville College and Oxford University to read English. She got another decree in 1938 from Radcliffe College in the States in English, the same college that her mother had attended. For some time, she worked as a civil servant, then at Time magazine. Jane went back to the United Kingdom in 1947.
A year later she would get married to English historian and journalist Alan Hodge. Hodge divorced his first wife earlier so that she could marry Robert Graves, a poet. She has written many works of fiction, including detective novels and historical novels. Jane renounced her citizenship in the United States in 1972 and became a subject of Britain.
She had been a believer for many years in the right of people to end their lives. She chose to bring her life to a conclusion in June of 2009. The obituary about her in the times said that she left a letter behind saying how she was distressed that she could not tell her daughters about her plans without risking them being made into accessories. Jane passed away June 17, 2009 at her home in Lewes, Sussex. Her two daughters and her granddaughters survive her.
Savannah Purchase is the first novel in the Purchas Family series by Jane Aiken Hodge. This novel first came out in 1970 for readers to enjoy.
Juliet and Josephine always had looked alike when they were younger. They were only cousins but people thought that they looked similar enough that they could be twins. This led to the two of them playing a game of impersonation, pretending to be the other from time to time.
While war and life may have ended up putting some distance between the two, it was clear over the years that the resemblance between the two of them remained. But life has brought them back together again, and now they are two gorgeous women caught in the middle of a terrible masquerade.
This is the story of intrigue and deception, set in the South in the nineteenth century in all of its elegance and splendor. Read this historical romance book to find out what happens as the two ladies grow up and find their place in the world!
