July 2024: Books I Read Last Month

Hope everyone had a good reading month.
My month was unfortunately very busy. I had various trips going on and while I love travel, it was those trips with little downtime for reading.
Even moreso considering two of the trips were to Georgia and Texas. After spending all day in the heat there was very little energy left for reading at night.
I’m at the cottage this month so usually a lot more reading going on.
The Cottage by Lisa Stone: Had to read this when I came up to the cottage. Not sure where I stumbled upon this one. It’s a standalone thriller. I’m not quite finished it yet and I could go either way on it opinion wise. It’s about a woman in a remote cottage with weird things happening outside, and another story involving stillborn babies and something odd involving them. Bit of a risky subject matter and we’ll see how it all ties together.
Two books by Freida McFadden: I read ‘The Wife Upstairs’. I binged this in one sitting over the course of about four hours. Really enjoyable book about a woman employed to look after a couples home. The couple live there, but the wife is in a wheelchair for life after an accident. Unfortunately one of those books which had real final act problems.
Also read the third book in the Housemaid series. One where I enjoyed but eh – time to retire The Housemaid in my opinion. I don’t think there’s anything more they can do there.
Find You First by Linwood Barclay: The story of a very rich person who finds he has a serious illness. When he was young he donated sperm, so he wants to find the people who he donated to to both warn them the disease could be hereditery, and also give them lots of money.
He finds 9 people who are his kids…..but someone else seems to know too as they are being killed off one by one. Solid story, great idea, and a good book by Linwood.
Take Your Breath Away by Linwood Barclay: Six years ago a women disappeared, presumed dead. Her husband was the main suspect. However she’s apparently shown up again years later.
Overall enjoyed this book, although it had a twist I didn’t like and was a disappointing ending. Shoutout to George Newbern who primarily narrates both books and adds a lot. Superb narrator.
Think Twice by Harlan Coben: I’m going to think twice before I buy another Coben book. Actually I swore off him a couple of years ago but then a new Bolitar book? Had to read it. Win and Myron just felt like caricatures, and I thought the ending was ludicrous.

I have long been a huge fan of Harlan Coben, especially the Myron Bolitar books, but I agree that ‘Think Twice’ does nothing for his legacy. It’s messy, complicated and meaningless. A huge disappointment. Unfortunately, the recent Netflix dramatisations of his works have made me realise just how bad his stories can be. I think I’ve sworn off him now as well. Shame.
