The main character of Thomas Lynch once served as a brilliant art historian at a young age. Now he is an art historian of middle age, a man who is disgraced, who has a preference for not only the bottle but the young students that he teaches as well.
But everything might be about to change. Thomas is on the trail of a legendary Madonna, a masterpiece that has long been lost. He’s looking for the artwork done by Giovanni Bellini, an Italian master. By putting himself into the manor house in England virtually falling down to find where the painting could be hidden, the author tries to fool the beautiful and eccentric women who live there.
However, he might find out that in this complex game, he is only a pawn. Robert Browning being brought into the picture through a Victorian diary might end up being the key, but only if Lynch is able to beat the hosts in the search.
It may end up being that Lynch’s own heart will betray a betrayer. Complex and rewarding, this story takes you tot he countryside of England to other places in this incredible debut.

Hiram Carver is on the USS Orbis as it goes from Boston to go around Cape Horn. There he is the ship’s doctor and takes up first position. Anxious and callow among the other sailors who have been doing this for some time, he is having a difficult time finding his way in this world. That is, until he encounters William Borden.
Borden is legendary among the sailors and he is virtually the hero of the providence. He’s hypnotizing in his presence to Carver, and this is even before he starts being told the man’s story. Previously, Borden was able to rescue many men from mutiny, leading them all to safety in a dinghy across the Pacific.
There are many ships that deal with terror coming from the deep. But what happens on their ship may bond Carver and Borden together until the end of time. Carver recovers and starts working at an asylum for the insane in Boston, he’s going to find Borden again. But this time he will be starving, broken, and utterly taken over by madness that has been after him since sailing on the Providence.
Carver is making sure that Borden can be cured, but it means that he’s going to have to find out what really happened on that trip. Even when monsters are brought up, they are not going to be able to be put to rest. Now Carver has to go to the sea’s edge once more and face down the myth and the man in the dark water.
