Qian Julie Wang is a published best-selling author.
It was her debut memoir titled Beautiful Country: A Memoir of an Undocumented Childhood that first introduced her to the literary world and the world at large. The book was received very well and was picked as a best book for the year 2021 by Good Housekeeping, NPR, Newsweek, President Obama, the New York Times, and more.
The author was born in Shijazhuang, China. She was just seven years old when she moved with her parents to relocate and start an entirely new life in Brooklyn, New York. It was during the five years after that that the family resided in New York City living a life that was filled with hope but also the stress of being undocumented.
Beautiful Country is the true story of what Qian Julie Wang went through and her story continues the tale of what happens to the family as the years go on. They manage to try and keep their heads up as they deal with their struggles in the United States, dealing with poverty and manual labor while the threat of being deported loomed over their heads constantly. Still, the family manages to experience joy even as they live in uncertain terms.
Qian Julie has been able to use this foundation to attend higher learning. She attended Yale Law School and graduated, following it up with Swarthmore College. There she was able to attend classes and even extra curricular activities on the side with being employed at no fewer than four part-time jobs. It has paid off and she now enjoys a successful career as a litigator.
As for her debut memoir, Beautiful Country was written entirely while on her iPhone, as the author made the most of a commute on the subway attending work and going home from the law firm that she worked at. There within two years of becoming part of the firm she was elected to partnership. Today she is managing partner of the firm Gottlieb & Wang LLP. The firm devotes its efforts to advocating for civil rights and education.
As for herself, the author believes that systemic barriers can be lessened through providing the underprivileged clients with legal representation such as the wealthy would have. This is also a part of making social change by changing up the stories that are told and the lens that they are seen in across the nation in courtrooms.
In addition to her debut memoir, Wang has also had her writing published in outlets such as The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Atlantic, and others. She has also made appearances on different media shows such as PBS News Hour, NBC, The Today Show, and NPR.
Qian Julie also works as a speaker. Through her speeches she is able to talk about different issues that extend to education, immigration, discrimination, literacy, and more. She is often speaking at different types of locations including universities, community centers, conferences, corporations, and houses of worship. Qian Julie is a natural storyteller who is able to evoke different emotions in the audience while focusing on the humanity that we all share. The author resides with her family in Brooklyn.

Mei Guo is the word to represent America in Chinese, and it means ‘beautiful country’. Qian is about to witness this beautiful land for herself when at just seven years old, she transplants to New York City. She is not alone, of course; her parents are with her to help her make the transition. But they are all new here in 1994, and Qian feels curiosity when she arrives, a feeling that quickly leads to fear and worry about the scarcity.
Her parents enjoyed a good living in China where they both were professors. Here they are not legal and must do whatever it takes to get by, but in a way that keeps them from being discovered. This will help them to survive, and they use everything that they can to try and get by, even experiencing joy along the way.
Qian’s parents no longer work teaching but now must work in sweatshops placed in Chinatown. They no longer have time to smile at her and laugh at the jokes that she tells. Their mood has changed and the couple fights all of the time due to the stress of their life here.
The young girl does whatever she can to escape and decides that the library is the perfect place to hide away. She also does this to hide away from the other students and her teachers, who shut her out for not knowing much English. There she gets better at English through the use of books, being able to start acclimating to American culture and the English language through The Berenstain Bears.
Qian is always happy to find joy in all the little places. Sometimes that is the first time that she tried a slice of pizza, other times it is where she goes shopping and finds little things, treasure from the trash. She also goes to Rockefeller Center around Christmas, which seems just like the city that she always saw in the movies come to life.
Things are trundling along for the family, but then something goes wrong with Ma Ma. She collapses and they find out that she has been sick for months and hiding it because of how much a visit to the doctor would cost and the attention they might get for being illegals. Her family advised her to say that she lived here, that she was born here, always, if anyone were to ask.
An incredible true story of a child that grew up poor with her family, becoming invisible by necessity and growing up to achieve the American dream. Read Beautiful Country by Qian Julie Wang to catch this amazing story for yourself!
