Kacey Ezell
Kacey Ezell was born in 1977 in South Dakota. Her parents joined the US Air Force in 1984, and she grew up all around the world on various military bases. When Kacey was just seven years old, her mom gave her a copy of “Dragondrums” by Anne McCaffrey, and shortly after, Kacey decided that she wanted to be a dragonrider when she grew up.
In 1999, Kacey followed her parents into the “family business” and graduated from the US Air Force Academy before she entered into pilot training. Since dragons were in short supply at the time, she reasoned that flying aircraft was the next best thing. She earned her wings in 2001, and has got more than 2,500 hours flying in the Mi-17 and UH-1N helicopters.
Kacey, since she was a small child, made stories up to tell her family and friends. In 2009, while she was deployed in Iraq, she wrote “Light”, a military themed supernatural story, which got accepted to Citizens, the Baen Books anthology.
She got asked to consult on John Ringo’s novel “Strands of Sorrow” and she wrote the cover story for the Black Tide Rising anthology set in Ringo’s zombie apocalypse universe. The story, called “Not in Vain” got selected for inclusion in the “Year’s Best Military SF and Adventure Fiction” anthology produced by Baen Books.
Kacey has written a story for each of the bestselling Four Horsemen Universe anthologies, and her story “Family Over Blood” is included in “Forged in Blood”, a national bestseller set in Michael Z. Williamson’s Freehold Universe. It also was selected for inclusion in the “Year’s Best Military SF and Adventure Fiction” anthology in 2018, and wound up winning the Baen Reader’s Choice Award at DragonCon that year.
“Minds of Men” was a Dragon Award Finalist for Best Alternate History in 2018.
Kacey has a couple techniques for writer’s block, and is still figuring things out. However her first go-to is exercise. If she goes for a run, she is often able to allow her mind to drift and think through whatever plot problem holds her up.
That said, if the “block” is less of a plot issue and more of a “motivation problem”, she does something that she calls “grinding”. Which is, she tells herself that she is going to sit down and write at least 100 words. And if after these 100 words, she is still feeling unmotivated, she will chalk it up and try again the next day. Every time she’s tried this out, she has written quite a bit more than 100 words. Sometimes 2,000 or 3,000 words each session.
The key is that she has to take care of herself as well. If she is overtired, or has yet to eat, she is able to grind, however it won’t work as well as it would if she just went to bed at a decent time and kept her nutrition.
“Minds of Men” is the first novel in the “Psyche of War” series and was released in 2017. Evelyn Adamsen grew up knowing that she had to hide her psychic abilities, lest she get labeled as a witch. But the US Army Air Corps came calling in 1943, looking for psychic women to help their beleaguered bomber force, and Evelyn answered, hoping she could use her powers to integrate the bomber crews and save some American lives. She was very successful at doing it, too; at least until her aircraft got shot down.
Now Evelyn is on the run in occupied Europe, with this special unit of German Fallschimjager and an enemy psychic on her heels. Even worse, she learns that using her psychic powers functions like a strobe which highlights her to the enemy.
While the enemy psychic closes in on her, she is faced with this dilemma in her struggles to escape: how can she possibly make it back to England when the one talent she’s got will expose her if she uses it?
“The World Asunder” is the second novel in the “Psyche of War” series and was released in 2019. The war took everything from Lina Sucherin. Like her sisters, parents, a fledgling romance. Even her faith in both herself and her psychic abilities. All of it got ripped away with the Third Reich’s fall and the brutal Soviet sack of Berlin.
Three years have gone by, amid the paranoia, suspicion, and fledgling brutality of communist East Germany, danger threatens the only people that Lina cares for, which forces her to overcome her lingering self-doubt. In order to save the only family that she’s got left, she’ll have to rise above her past and learn how to trust a former enemy (as well as herself) if she is going to be successful.
However does she still have enough of her psyche left in order to do that? Or has the war torn her world too far asunder for it to ever be whole again?
“Skies to Conquer” is the third novel in the “Psyche of War” series and was released in 2022. After the devastating galactic war, Ralston Muck (a disgraced war veteran) ekes out his living as a bouncer at Last Stop Station’s premier nightclub, A Curtain of Stars. Each night he listens to Siren (the club’s star performer) sing her memories and ease his aching loss a bit. However Siren goes missing, Muck finds he’s drawn into a world of drug lords, dirty cops, and conspiracies which trace back to the war itself.
There’s one person that he can’t trust that is not even human. Angel, who is Siren’s own personal AI, got ripped out of the singer’s mind the night Siren vanished. Without any idea what’s happened to her human host, and pursued by this killer virus, Angel flees to Muck to get answers.
Together the pair struggle to even comprehend the conspiracy which entangles each of their lives. Can Muck and this angel on his shoulder possibly recover Siren before it is too late? Or is he going to lose everything that matters to him yet again?
