Brandon Webb is a retired Navy SEAL sniper, now an accomplished entrepreneur and author. During his days in the Navy Seal, Brandon was the head instructor at the Navy SEAL sniper school, producing some of the best American snipers.
At the age of 16, Brandon left home and joined the U.S. Navy, intending to become a Navy SEAL. His first role was an Aviation Warfare Systems Operator and helicopter Search & Rescue (SAR) swimmer. In 1997, he was accepted into SEAL training (BUD/S class 215) and completed the rigorous training, being one of the original twenty-three graduates.

During his Navy career, Brandon served with SEAL Team 3, the Naval Special Warfare Group One Training Detachment (as part of the sniper cell), and the Naval Special Warfare Center’s sniper course, where he managed the Naval Special Warfare West Coast Sniper Course.
Throughout his military service, he undertook several deployments to the Afghanistan and the Middle East. In 2006-7, he returned to Iraq as a contractor, supporting the U.S. intelligence community. Brandon excelled as a leader and was promoted to First Class Petty Officer with the top ranking in his command while serving as an instructor in the sniper cell. Briefly after, he received another promotion to the rank of Chief Petty Officer (CPO).

His dedicated service earned him several distinguished awards, including recognition as the Top Frog at Team 3 for his outstanding combat diving skills, the Presidential Unit Citation presented by President George W. Bush, and the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with a “V” device for displaying valor in combat. Brandon decided to conclude his Navy career early to spend more time with his children and concentrate on his entrepreneurial pursuits.

Steel Fear is the debut book in the Finn Thrillers series by Brandon Webb and John David Mann. The book is described as a high-octane thriller and lives up to that description.

The main character is Finn, a SEAL unexpectedly sent to the United States on The Abraham Lincoln. He is not aware of the reason for his transfer, and no one on the ship seems to have answers either. This mystery keeps Finn and the reader on edge. When helicopter pilot Monica Halsey picks him up, they encounter two mysterious individuals: a large man resembling a mountain lion and a small man resembling a marsupial.

The crew on the carrier is dealing with a tragic and unexplained accident that took the lives of helicopter crew members, followed by two suicides. These suicides are strangely similar, and Halsey becomes suspicious. Finn also senses that something is amiss.
The first half of the book delves into military aircraft carrier technology and personnel, which can be quite detailed and complex. It’s a challenging read, particularly for those not familiar with Navy terminology and context. The narrative occasionally shifts between Finn, which may be a bit distracting. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that there are many gaps and mysteries, reflecting the uncertain nature of the Gulf and the Pacific.

The story is also quite graphic and gory, not suitable for readers with a low tolerance for explicit content, whether it’s physical descriptions or emotional darkness. The writing style is reminiscent of early Stephen King in terms of its intensity.

Overall, Steel Fear is a thrilling journey aboard a massive nuclear-powered aircraft carrier with a crew of almost six thousand. It vividly conveys the enormity of the ship and the challenges of its operation, making it clear that this is not the same vessel Finn knew from his past. The ship is on a troubled and foreboding voyage, and the captain remains hidden from the crew.

Finn, the main character, is a decorated SEAL TEAM member who is unsure why he’s been brought onto the carrier. His odd behavior and constant reconnaissance missions raise suspicion among the officers. He is shifty, secretive and a manipulative and has huge gaps in his memory. He observes the dynamics of leadership on the ship, noting the difference between those who grow into their roles and those who misuse their power.

Despite the military setting and the authors’ backgrounds, Steel Fear is not a typical military or special forces story. It’s more of a mystery set in a unique and high-stakes environment. Even if you’re not usually drawn to military fiction, this novel offers a compelling and hard-to-put-down story, comparable to a murder mystery set on a floating, high-tech aircraft carrier.

From Delta Force Operators to Army Rangers and Special Ops Marines, these highly trained soldiers possess the unique ability to use cutting-edge weaponry and display exceptional bravery to accomplish their missions.

It’s important to note that this book may not be suitable for everyone due to its depiction of war and violence. While the violence is not gratuitous and is not the central focus, it is present in the narrative.
