About Danielle Steel
Danielle Steel, a leading light in the world of American authors, has earned a significant reputation for the timeless themes of romance in her novels. Recognized as one of the best-selling authors alive, and one of the most prosperous fiction authors in history, she impressively boasts sales exceeding 800 million copies. Until 2021, she penned 190 books, out of which over 140 are novels, reinforcing her dominance in the literary realm.
California has served as Steel’s creative hub for a major part of her career where she often handles five projects simultaneously, showcasing her exceptional multitasking abilities. All her novels have been runaway successes, including those published in hardcover editions. Anchoring her stories in rich families grappling with crises, her narrative pulls viewers into worlds threatened by harsh realities such as imprisonment, fraud, coercion, and self-harm.
Branching out from adult fiction, Steel has also ventured into children’s literature and poetry, demonstrating her versatility as a writer. She set up a foundation aimed at supporting organizations tackling mental health issues, signifying her commitment to social causes. Her global reach is evident from her books being translated into 43 languages and 22 screen adaptations, with two of them being Golden Globe nominees.
Early and Personal Life
Danielle Fernandes Dominique Schuelein-Steel, popularly known as Danielle Steel, was born on August 14, 1947. The renowned author would come from a rich German-Jewish and Portuguese ancestry, and her dynamic upbringing in France ingrained within her a deep understanding of diverse social echelons.
At the young age of eight, the divorce of her parents led Danielle to find solace and expression in literature, blossoming her passion for storytelling and poetry. Her educational journey encompassed renowned design institutes where she fortified her unique narrative style.
Life handed Danielle a series of challenges and milestones. Amid balancing five marriages, motherhood, and her writing career, Danielle was determined to find her niche. Her dedication saw her write into the night, compromising sleep to bring her stories to life. She overcame personal hurdles including a fear of flying, and now comfortably divides her time between her homes in San Francisco and Paris.
Most poignant in Danielle’s journey is her transformation of personal tragedy into a beacon for societal change. After her son, Nick Traina, tragically took his own life, Danielle wrote a book to showcase his battle with mental health. The proceeds from this book help fund the Nick Traina Foundation, dedicated to supporting other mental health organizations.
Danielle continued her advocacy for change by lobbying for legislative modifications for children’s mental health in Washington and by establishing a second foundation to aid the homeless.
Writing Career
Danielle Steel embarked on her writing journey while still a student at New York University, completing her debut manuscript at the young age of 19. Under the mentorship of a renowned editor and her subsequent move to San Francisco, she soon saw her first novel, ‘Going Home,’ hit the shelves in 1973. This marked the dawn of her illustrious writing career, paving the way into San Francisco’s high society.
Propelling to literary stardom in 1981, Steel dominated The New York Times Bestsellers list, earning a coveted spot in the Guinness Book of World Records. Known for her prolific writings and exquisite work ethic, she adeptly juggle multiple projects at once. Her versatile writing skills saw her transition into non-fiction and children’s literature, earning her recognition and numerous accolades, including an induction into the California Hall of Fame.
She’s also seen numerous adaptations of her work, both on the large and small-screen.
Summer’s End
‘Summer’s End’ was an early contemporary romance novel by Danielle Steel. It was published in 1979, becoming another hallmark in Steel’s blossoming career. The book was introduced to readers by the Warner Books publishing house.
Deanna, with her diamonds, beautiful home, and loving husband, believed she had all she desired. Yet, her husband’s jet-set lifestyle led to Deanna spending summer alone. That was until she met Ben, and they discovered happiness together on sun-drenched beaches. Their dream was fleeting, and they hadn’t anticipated the drastic changes awaiting them by summer’s end.
Kaleidoscope
The contemporary romance novel ‘Kaleidoscope’ is another of Danielle Steel’s well-loved works. Published in 1987, the book added to her long list of successful novels. The book was brought to the public eye by Delacorte Press.
A fantastical romance between a young Frenchwoman and an American actor in wartime Paris ends in tragedy, leaving their three children mysteriously separated. While Megan grows up comfortably and becomes a doctor in Appalachia, Alexandra is raised in opulence, ignorant of her adoption and her turbulent past.
Hilary, their elder sister, haunted by their separation, foregoes personal life for a notable career. Then enters John Chapman, a lawyer tasked to find the sisters, marking the beginning of a journey from New York to Appalachia, leading up to a staggering revelation.
Zoya
The contemporary romance novel ‘Zoya,’ penned by acclaimed author Danielle Steel, was published in 1988. This title further solidified Steel’s reputation for creating engaging and heartwarming stories. The publishing house responsible for bringing this novel to readers was Delacorte Press.
Amidst the turmoil of the Russian Revolution and World War I, Zoya, a royal relative, escapes from St. Petersburg to Paris. Adapting to a transformed world, she joins the Ballet Russe and eventually moves to a glittering life in New York. Despite losing everything during the Depression, her career and a newfound love help her rebuild. From the roaring twenties to the 1980s, Zoya’s life narrative embodies a strong, enduring spirit.
Message from Nam
The novel ‘Message from Nam’ was a further contemporary romance by Danielle Steel. This captivating tale made its debut in 1990, adding another feather to Steel’s illustrious cap. Delacorte Press would again present this novel to the literary world.
Journalist Paxton Andrews witnesses the Vietnam war close-up, a journey starting from Savannah high school, extending to Berkeley college, and finally leading her to Saigon. Various soldiers she encounters undergo irrevocable transformations due to the Vietnam war.
From law school recruit to seasoned correspondent and hardened soldiers, everyone she meets navigates their fate in the war-stricken nation. Despite leaving Vietnam after seven years and attending Paris peace talks, Paxton and the soldiers’ lives remain forever altered.

My mom left me a few of your books when she left this world. She absolutely loved you. And one day I picked up a book she had, called journey. And in 36 hours. I had read the book. And was hooked for life. My kids say I read to much because I bought the latest book and read it in 3 days. lol. I love every book I have read so far. I love all of your books. I have a friend who has everyone that has come out so far. Keep up the good work. Thanks.
I have been reading Dnaielle Steel books for 44 years. I was working the switchboard night shift at a hospital and someone left a book and I finished it over a weekend that I worked. Did not bother to look at the name of the book or the author. I got married and my husband’s grandmother belonged to a book club and they would send her books every month. She would read them and put them in a cupboard and I would go in there and pick out what I wanted. First book I picked out was the book I had read working at the hospital. Been reading Danielle Steel ever since. That was in 1979 and the book was Going Home.
I love Danielle Steel novels. A few years ago I made a list of all of them. Then made a list of the ones I had missed. For my 80th birthday my daughter gave me all 15 of the missing novels. I hope I have time to read them all between reading the new ones. Thank you Ms. Steel for the enjoyable reading.
Where did your daughter source your missing Danielle Steel books from? I am missing 11 of her older books and have been unable to find them anywhere.
Thanks for in anticipation.
I have collected most of her books from Going Home until books of 2022. I don’t know what to do with them now. My daughters don’t read them. If I can help let me know. I am in Wisconsin.
Karen

Still reading Danielle Steel novels. I can’t seem to get enough. I finish one and start another almost immediately. I go to other authors and can’t seem to be drawn in like your novels. They are real and complelling and I can’t put them down. I carry a list on me so if I see one I can buy it. I am on my way to purchase another one that I realize I don’t have. If you have not tried one yet, I urge you to run and find one at a bookstore or library. May you keep blessing us with your stories that are so relatetable and riveting. I recently got NO GREATER LOVE at my local library when I got to the end there seemed to be missing pages I don’t think it was the end. The last paragraph was I think we’re both crazy,Sam but I think I like it. She moved closer to him and he smiled and then he turned, pulled her close, and held her tight as he kissed her. Is this the end of the book or are there missing pages I would really like to know if it is possible.
I love this site! Just an FYI…you are missing Lost and Found written in 2020 by Danielle Steel.

Thanks Susan – much appreciate the positive comments 🙂 And we have Lost and Found listed already 🙂 It was published in 2019.
I am a real superfan. I love and admire and can’t get enough of Danielle Steel novels/books. I buy one whenever I see one I don’t have and have read now at least 60 so far and may have not started counting or writing them down to keep track from the first one I read. I love the read so much that I will keep going until I have read them all if possible. Thank you for keeping me reading. It really started me on a path to reading as we were going camping and I wanted something to read on my relaxation time. May God keep you going and may He bless you all the days you have here. Thank you again so much. LaurieLanglois. St.Catharines,Ontario,Canada.
