Jamie Smart is a very popular comics author from the United Kingdom that is best known for the “Flember” series of novels.

He loves to say that while he went to college to study art, he only did it so that he could have an excuse to draw animals with weird eyes.

His “Fish-Head Steve” comic would make history when it made the shortlist for the Roald Dhl Funny Prize. Over the years, Smart has illustrated comics for the likes of “Toxic magazine,” the “Sunday Times,” “The Beano,” and “The Dandy.”
He has also regularly published his popular “Looshkin” and “Bunny vs Monkey” stories in The Phoenix comic in addition to several children’s graphic novels.

James published “The Secret Book,” his debut work in 2019, and has since become quite a prolific graphic novelist and artist. He believes he has been lucky to have many opportunities to work on his own characters.
Writing “Bear” was probably his most personal and exciting moment. However, his proudest work has to be when he published “Find Chaffy,” his children’s book, and when he was contracted to write the weekly “Bunny vs Monkey” for The Phoenix.
He has also loved working on “Doctor Who” and “Desperate Dan.”

Similar to many artists, James Smart has been doing comics ever since he was old enough to hold a pencil and has never stopped. He was very fortunate that he was born to very supportive parents who early on realized that he was fascinated with comics.
It was also his parents who encouraged him to attend art college which gave him a lot of freedom that he needed to become the excellent comic book author that he is today.

Going to college allowed him to tap into the mental space so that he could better explore and put out some very innovative works.

James Smart also got inspiration from reading comics and graphic novels as a child growing up. As a child, he loved reading a wide variety of comics such as “Whizzer And Chips,” “Buster,” “Topper,” “Beano,” and “Dandy.”
These were full of original comics and he particularly loved “Oink” which he found anarchic and scruffy. He also read many strip cartoons from the newspapers such as “Garfield” and “Calvin and Hobbes.”

Still, he believes that his biggest influence had to be “Blackadder, The Young Ones,” the TV comedy show from the 1980s. He used to watch the show repeatedly and obsessively and this gave him the sense of humor that he now infuses into his work.

James Smart had his first break working with comic book companies when he was contracted by SLG to pen the “Bear” comic book.

It was in 2002 that he sent them four different comic strip ideas and they went with Bear which they felt was the right fit. Being given the freedom to pen and do whatever he wanted with his comic was one of the biggest milestones of his career.
He has now worked in both print and online writing digital works but still prefers print as a mode for transmitting his work.

He feels that print is akin to holding something such as a CD as opposed to flipping through several hundred songs on a smartphone or computer. He believes with print it is possible to come up with something that people can treasure for decades.
On the other hand, he believes digital comics can also be rewarding as the canvas on which one can create is infinite and will only improve and evolve over time.
James believes that the ideal world is one in which digital and print will coexist, even if they are two parts of the whole.

“The Secret Book” by James Smart is a work set on a mysterious island that is the home of “Flember,” a mystical and strange power.

The lead is Dev, a boy inventor who has unearthed a long-forgotten secret in the form of a huge red robot bear. Eden the little sleepy village where he lives is about to experience some disastrous chaos in what is a madcap adventure.
It makes for amazing work with a good story and interesting characters that also combine sad moments with some hilarious jokes that set up perfectly for the following titles in the series.

It is an interesting graphic novel that many parents have asserted to be great for children between the ages of six and ten. This is a work that you can deal with your child well past bedtime and comes with plots that you can discuss with them later.
It will make you and your kid feel sad/worried, make you laugh, and be very happy, particularly at the end of the story.

It is a work that will provide some happy memories and great talking points, even if there are many questions that are left unanswered.

James Smart’s novel “The Crystal Caves” continues to follow DEV the Boy-Inventor and BOJA his best friend who have stumbled upon a secret map.

They are now going on a quest to find Flember the famed magical energy. However, they will first have to survive in a lifeless town in addition to traveling through the scary wildening. They will also have to learn how to control BOJA’s fiery farts.
This work just like the debut is great for children between the ages of 6 and 10. Many parents have reported that their children were totally immersed and enjoyed reading the work.

Boja and Dev make for some fantastic characters yet again, even as they fail and make all manner of blunders but do their best to try to fix the many things that they break.
It is also a work with many laugh-out-loud moments in addition to many touching ones that a lot of kids will definitely enjoy.

In “The Glowing Skull,” Dev and BOJA his best friend make a return in what is an interesting adventure in Prospertu, a mega modern and high-tech city.

There is a battle in progress that has to do with who will harness the Flember’s magical powers. The big question is will Boja and Dev be on the right side of the war?
It makes for an uplifting, anarchic, and fantastical work that celebrates loyalty, creativity, and friendship.
