“Secrets in the Cellar: A True Story of the Austrian Incest Case that Shocked the World” is a non-fiction book that was released in 2009. Josef Fritzl was a 73 year old retired engineer in Austria. He just seemed to be living this normal life with Rosemarie, his wife, and their family. Although Elisabeth, one of their daughters, had decades earlier gotten “lost” to this religious cult. Over the years, three of Elisabeth’s kids mysteriously arrived on the Fritzls’ doorstep: Rosemarie and Josef raised them as their own. However only Josef knew the full truth behind Elisabeth’s disappearance.
Josef had imprisoned and molested Elisabeth in his man made basement dungeon for twenty-seven years. The dungeon was complete with code-protected locks and sound proof paneling. There, she’d eventually give birth to a total of seven of Josef’s kids. One died during infancy, while the other three were raised right alongside Elisabeth, never seeing the light of day.
And then, in the year 2008, one of her kids got seriously ill, and was taken off to the hospital. It was the very first time that this nineteen year old woman had ever been outside. Before long the truth about her family’s captivity, her background, and Josef’s unspeakable crimes would be brought to light.
“My Sweet Angel: The True Story of Lacey Spears, the Seemingly Perfect Mother Who Murdered Her Son in Cold Blood” is a non-fiction book that was released in 2016. Lacey Spears made international headlines in January of 2015 when she got charged with the “depraved mind” murder of Garnett, her five year old son. Prosecutors alleged that this 27 year old mom poisoned him with large concentrations of salt through his stomach tube.
Spears, to the outside world, seemed like a perfect mom, regularly posting these dramatic updates on her son’s harrowing medical problems. The reality was much worse, because she was a textbook case of Munchausen by Proxy Syndrome. Starting when Garnett was just an infant, she deliberately made him sick to get sympathy from medical professionals, as well as her hundreds of followers on Facebook and other social media platforms. When this Westchester County jury found her guilty of murdering Garnett in April of 2015, she got sentenced to twenty years to life in prison.
Using Lacey’s own never before seen Twitter, Facebook, and blog posts, this exclusive prison interview with Lacey herself, along with interviews with her family and three police investigators that broke the case, this provides the definitive accounting of such a shocking case.
“The Family Next Door” is a non-fiction book that was released in 2019. The devastating story about the Turpins: this seemingly normal family whose dark secrets would captivate and shock the world.
January 14, 2018, this seventeen year old girl climbs out of the window of her Perris, California home and dialed 911 with her shaking fingers. Struggling to remain calm, she told the operator that she and her 12 siblings (ranging in age from 2 to 29) were abused by their parents. The dispatcher asked the girl for her address, the girl hesitated. She had never been out, she said.
To their online friends, family, and neighbors, David and Louise Turpin presented this picture of domestic bliss: dressing their kids up in matching outfits and buying expensive presents for. However what the cops learned when they entered the Turpin family home would eclipse the most shocking of child abuse cases in all of history. Louise and David kept their kids in increasing isolation, trapping them in this sinister world of abuse, torture, and almost starvation.
In the first major account of this case, John Glatt (investigative journalist and author) delves deeper into the disturbing details and recounts the bravery of these thirteen siblings in the face of this unimaginable terror.
“The Perfect Father: The True Story of Chris Watts, His All-American Family, and a Shocking Murder” is a non-fiction book that was released in 2020. In this book, John Glatt reveals the true story about a Colorado family whose storybook life gets turned into a nightmare.
Shanann Watts, in the early morning hours of August 13, 2018, gets dropped off at her Frederick, Colorado home by her colleague after she returns from a business trip. It was the very last time anybody would see her alive. By the next day, Shanann and Bella and Celeste (her two young daughters) were reported missing. And Chris Watts, her husband, was on the local news, pleading for his family to be safely returned.
However Chris knew already that he would never see his family ever again. Under 24 hours after his desperate plea, he made this shocking confession to the police. He had strangled his pregnant wife to death and smothered their daughters, and dumped their bodies at this nearby oil site. Heartbroken neighbors and friends watched in shock while the movie star handsome and devoted family man that they knew was arrested and then charged with first degree murder. This perfect mask that Chris had presented to the whole world in his TV interviews and the family’s Facebook accounts was slipping and what lay underneath was this terrifying image of sexual ambivalence, infidelity, instability, and boiling rage.
In the first major account of the case, John Glatt reveals the truth behind such a tragedy and constructs this chilling portrait of one of the most shocking of family annihilator cases of the 21st century.
