About Greta Thunberg

Greta Thunberg is a respected and well-known climate activist who began raising awareness on the need to take immediate action against climate change as a 15-year-old schoolgirl. Her calls for awareness soon began drawing international attention which ultimately led to the formation of her Skolstrejk för klimatet (“School strike for the climate”), and eventually a world-wide movement, with an estimated 1.4 million students in 112 countries taking part in her protests.

In recognition of her work, Thunberg was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in March 2019, and later featured on the cover of the Time magazine at the age of 16. Her efforts have been identified as the catalyst for inspiring even more people globally to join the cause and take meaningful steps regarding climate change.

Thunberg has not only helped make substantial improvements in Sweden’s climate goals, but also pushed the world at large to follow suit. Her dedication to the cause and her inspirational speeches have made her one of the most influential and powerful voices advocating for a cleaner, greener future.

Early and Personal Life

Greta Tintin Eleonora Ernman Thunberg, born in Stockholm, Sweden on January 3, 2003, was introduced to the climate issue from a young age, causing her a great deal of concern. Later, when she was 11, she was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome, OCD, and selective mutism. Initially, her parents weren’t supportive of her mission but eventually changed their habits and mindset towards the environment when Greta presented facts and figures. Her mother, an opera singer, even gave up her international career in flying due to this newfound lifestyle.

Greta’s mother and father, Malena Ernman and Svante Thunberg, released the book Our Home is on Fire: Scenes From a Family and a Planet in Crisis in 2020, which narrates their family’s struggles with climate issues and mental health. Greta points out that her mother’s career change was of her own volition, inspired by her daughter’s data and information on the matter.

The events that occur around Greta have brought her peace and joy, as well as her realisation of the number of autistic activists in the Fridays for Future movement, which she has identified with. To Greta, autism is not an illness, but a superpower. She commented in 2021 that activists within the movement are warmly welcomed.

Greta has been devoted for her cause, striving to bring awareness to the looming climate crisis and call for significant change. From her family to her peers, her activism has left an imprint on our society – and Greta knows she can be of even more benefit to the world.

Writing Career and Activism

Thunberg has received numerous accolades for her activism. In 2018, she won an essay competition by the Svenska Dagbladet, made Time’s 25 Most Influential Teens and was awarded the Fryshuset scholarship for Young Role Model of the Year. 2019 brought more recognition, such as the Swedish Woman of the Year from the Swedish Women’s Educational Association, the Rachel Carson Prize, Goldene Kamera Film and Television Awards, Ambassador of Conscience Award, Geddes Environment Medal, Right Livelihood Award, Time Person of the Year and Glamour Woman of the Year Award.

Her work has extended into writing, with the publication of ‘No One Is Too Small to Make a Difference’ through Penguin Books. She has also co-authored ‘Our House Is On Fire: Scenes of a Family and a Planet in Crisis’, which details the events that triggered the climate change movement. Thunberg would later edit her next book, ‘The Climate Book’, a guide to climate justice and climate change that was published in October 2022 to a great deal of critical acclaim.

Greta Thunberg, the world-renowned climate activist, shares her message of hope in her book: The Climate Book. In it, she emphasizes the importance of listening to science, in order to overcome the seemingly impossible challenge of saving our planet. Greta brings together the wisdom of over one hundred experts – geophysicists, economists, and indigenous leaders alike – to provide a better understanding of the vital information that has been kept hidden from us.

The Climate Book is a call to action and demonstrates that we, as a collective, have the power to make the impossible a reality. Schooling us in both knowledge and demonstrating skills, Greta shows us that if we all work together to put a stop to climate disaster, we can make the planet a safe place, once again.

This call-to-action is a must-read for anyone wishing to be informed on the latest happenings in climate science. Its mission is fueled by hope, and its call to action should not be ignored. This book is a great way to become informed and begin taking responsible steps to save our planet.
