Michelle Sagara West is a Japanese-Canadian author. She was born in 1963 as Michelle Michiko Sagara, but publishes books under the names Michelle Sagara, Michelle West, and Michelle Sagara West.
Sagara is the oldest child in her family. Her parents are Japanese immigrants who moved to the Great White North. During her growing up, Sagara loved reading from a young age. Her favorites were the Nancy Drew Mysteries, but she also enjoyed the work of Enid Blyton and J.R.R. Tolkien.
She went on to attend university at the University of Toronto. She had originally studied Physics and then moved on to studying English, but eventually decided to leave university in order to focus on trying to become a writer.
Michelle published her first book in 1991, Into the Dark Lands. This came after a very memorable rejection. She had sent her manuscript to Del Rey Books in 1987, but was rejected. She ended up revising it and sending it back in, but it was once again rejection. This came with a letter from the legendary Lester del Rey. The letter featured his trademark curmudgeon attitude, but she was able to glean something from it as he stated that there was a flashback of 94 pages that he thought needed to be their own book and the first book in a series. Sagara got the letter back and that’s exactly what she wrote, and soon after that they would buy it.
The Broken Crown is the first book in the Sun Sword series. The book takes place at Tor Leonne, the heart of the Dominion of Annagar. The games of state here are becoming a matter of life and death with those who are seeking the crown being put in league with a treacherous ally. The area is an ancestral seat of power and is the home to Serra Diora Maria di’Marano, the most desired beauty in the land. She is capable of striking a blow that could change the future of the Empire.
There is also Averalaan Aramarelas, the most ancient of the civilized cities. The area has long been the center of magics, dark and light, and now finds itself on the brink of another magic-fueled battle with a deadly foe.
The realm is on the brink of a great confrontation as they are faced with an unholy alliance that could spell the end of freedom for all mortalkind.
The Chronicles of Elantra is one of Sagara’s most popular book series. The series begins with Cast in Shadow. The story begins seven years after Kaylin fled the streets of Nightshade because she believed that something was after her. There were other children being murdered, children with the same odd marking on their skin that she has.
Kaylin has spent the ensuing years learning to read and fight, becoming one of the Hawks who patrol and police the City of Elantra. She works with the winged Aerians and the immortal Barrani to keep the city safe.
However, children are now once again dying and the pattern is quite familiar to Kaylin. She is called back to Nightshade, the town she left behind, with a partner that she doesn’t trust. Her task is to find the killer and stop the murders, but that will be easier said than done. Especially with those who claim to be allies working against her.
Michelle’s first book was Into the Dark Lands, the first book in The Sundered series of books. The Servants of the Bright Heart and the Servants of the Dark Heart have been locked in a war against each other for millennia with no sign of ending. What they don’t know, what only the Lady knows, is that the end is coming. She has seen it in a vision that spans time and demands the highest of prices.
Erin is a healer who has learned to wield a sword and bring death to her enemies, going against her very nature. She is scarred by the losses of war, but now finds herself chosen as the champion of Light and the enemy of darkness. Her journey will send her into the Dark Heart’s stronghold, taking her right into the hands of her people’s greatest enemy.
Silence is the first book in the Queen of the Dead series, a young adult paranormal trilogy. The story follows Emma who started coming to the graveyard at night after the loss of her boyfriend, Nathan. She spends her days going through the motions at school and seems like a normal kid, but for her life stopped when Nathan died.
She returns to the graveyard and on this night something was different: she wasn’t alone. Emma saw a kid from school, Eric, and an old woman who looks like she is made of rags. The woman reaches out to touch Emma and her grip is as cold as death.
It turns out that Emma really isn’t like other girls. It’s not just because her boyfriend died in a senseless accident though. It’s because she can see, touch, and speak with the dead.
Sagara is also the author of the Wolves of Elantra series. The first book in the series is called The Emperor’s Wolves. The story takes place in the City of Elantra which is ruled by the Dragon Emperor. One of the weapons at his disposal is his Imperial Wolves. They are extremely dangerous and the populace knows them as assassins.
Severn Handred is the newest potential recruit and he looks to pass the difficult examination by the Tha’alani who have the ability to read minds. He’s prepared and will expose secrets that he’s never shared with anyone in order to pass the test.
He gets in with them and his first job sees him hunting after an interrogation leads to a lead in the case of a two-decade-old series of murders of the Tha’alani.
