As an author, Brett has penned some of the world’s best sellers. In fact, his first book, The Cleaner, managed to win two awards in its first year. The 2008 Barry Award in the best Thriller Category and the 2008 Shamus Award for the Best Debut novel. His second book, The Deceived managed to win the Barry Award for the best thriller in 2009. He has also received other Barry nominations for The Silenced, the fourth in the Quinn Series.
Brett was raised in his Southern California, his birth town. Both his parents were avid readers, hence instilling the love of reading in him from an early age. He loved reading so much that his mom would have to kick him out of the house sometimes so that he can just get some sunshine.
Though California is still his home, Brent has travelled widely. In fact, it is through his travels that Brent gets inspiration for his books. His writing style has been influenced by writers such as Isaac Asimov, Alistair MacLean, Robert Heinlein, Robert Ludlum, Graham Greene, Stephen King, and Haruki Murakami. He is a father of three adorable children.
His Award winning novel, The Cleaner, is based on Jonathan Quinn, a cleaner whose main job is to erase all the traces of high-profile espionage jobs and assassinations. Jonathan usually enters the scene after the job is done. Removes all the traces of the job and goes on his way. Lately, he finds himself frequently working for a covert government bureau only known as the office.
In his world, this reliance is a mistake, it makes him vulnerable. But he still considers himself a freelancer, an unaligned soul. But he was very wrong. He soon discovers how wrong he was when a disruption, a massive attack on the office premises and personal also includes his life.
He manages to escape with his new apprentice called Nate to Vietnam. Later, Jonathan discovers that he was the target. That the price was on his head.
This discovery comes after a second attempt is made on his life. After the attempt in Berlin that kills Nate and nearly gets his long lost colleague and former lover, the sexy Eurasian Orlando, Jonathan realizes that the line has been crossed. He must go offensively.
He must track down the sadistic and scary Borko, and then uncover the person sanctioning the destruction of the office and unleash a bioweapon, a bioterrorism virus. Things take bitter twists when Orlando’s son is kidnapped. Garnet, Orlando’s son, is Jonathan’s friend, so the hunt gets personal and stranger.
Garret’s father, Durrie was Jonathan’s mentor, the man who introduced him to the cleaning profession and taught him the ropes. Both Jonathan and Orlando thought that the master cleaner was long dead. But the available evidence disputes this. It points to a complicated circle of betrayal tracing its roots in an imaginary triangle of love from years back.
In this book, Battle manages to present the readers with a very complex plot. Managing to mix action and dialogue, making this novel feel like paint by numbers.
Brett does a very poor job in painting the action. Only the cars that are usually driven a neck breaking speed are described in detail. The information on exotic locals such as the Ho Chi Minh City sounds hollow. Like they have been lifted straight from a guide book.
The characters are too many. But he manages to remedy this into a plus by ensuring that some of the characters remain ciphers. Like the lovable and elusive Orlando. Jonathan seems in human, apart from his desire to remain alive and the lust for Orlando that he tries to hide, he has no feeling at all. This is what makes him the professional he is, but the circumstances will break him.
The cleaner is one exciting novel. Brent takes the reader through the complex and intruding world of Jonathan Quinn in a fast paced methodological manner. You will soon find yourself trying to think and reason like Jonathan, something that will keep you hooked to the book until you close the last chapter.
2. Shadows of Betrayal.
The Shadow of Betrayal is a formulaic thriller that will serve you with the action but is riddled with stock character. In this fast-paced novel, Jonathan Quinn plays the lead role, a cleaner whose main job is to erase all the traces of high-profile espionage jobs and assassinations. Jonathan usually enters the scene after the job is done. Removes all the traces of the job and goes on his way.
Normally, Jonathan is a freelancer, he chooses his jobs carefully, but he makes a deal with the office when he desperately needed help. The deal was that he would do two jobs for them, with no questions asked.
The first job takes Jonathan and his assistant Nate, to a spot near Cork, Ireland, which is very isolated. It was an exchange, but it does not proceed as planned. Though Jonathan is worried about Nate’s performance due to his prosthetic leg, but that proves to be the last thing he should be worried about when the two agents they were to meet; both office agents; are shot. Jonathan and Nate are left to clean up the mess.
At this stage, Brent introduces a new character, a U.N Aide worker, Marion Dupuis, who takes care of Iris, an African girl with Down’s Syndrome. She is being sought by the government troops, the unwanted children, orphaned children with special needs, are disappearing in Africa, is she responsible? These are the questions that Brent raises about Marion to heighten the suspense and keep the novel interesting.
The shadow of betrayal opens up a world filled with conspiracies and betrayal. Brent poses questions and answers them in an interesting and satisfying manner.
His books are very interesting to read. His plots complex but at the same time understandable. You will never know what to expect when reading a Brent Battles novel.
You will find yourself craving for a bigger share of Jonathan Quinns world. The shadowy world was full of dangerous adventures.
