Chris Voss
Chris Voss was born November 28, 1957 in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. He got his Bachelor of Science from Iowa State University and Master of Public Administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government.
From 1986, until the year 2000, he was a member of the New York City Joint Terrorism Task Force. Chris was involved in monitoring the New York City landmark bomb plot after he spent three years investigating the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, one of 500 agents that were involved in this task. He was the “co-case agent” during the investigation of the 1996 TWA Flight 800 explosion.
In 2006, he was the lead negotiator on the Jill Carroll case in Iraq and the Steve Centanni case in the Gaza Strip. Chris was case agent on TERRSTOP (Omar Abdel-Rahman/‘The Blind Sheikh’ case). He supervised additional hostage cases in Haiti, the Philippines, and Colombia. Chris also negotiated the surrender of the first hostage taker to give up during the Chase Manhattan Bank robbery.
In the year 1992, he received hostage negotiation training at the FBI Academy. He spent 24 years working in the FBI Crisis Negotiation Unit and he was the FBI’s chief international kidnapping and hostage negotiator from 2003 until 2007.
During his 24 year long tenure with the Bureau, he’s trained in the art of negotiation by not just the FBI, but also Harvard Law School and Scotland Yard.
He retired in 2007 from the FBI, after he worked on over 150 international hostage cases. Then he founded The Black Swan Group. They serve as consultancy and trainer for both businesses and individuals on negotiation skills.
Chris also became an adjunct professor at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business as well as a lecturer at the USC Marshall School of Business. Chris has also taught business negotiation at Harvard University and guest lectured at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, the IMD Business School of Lausanne, Switzerland, and the Goethe Business School in Frankfurt, Germany.
He was given the Attorney General’s Award for Excellence in Law Enforcement and the FBI Agents Association Award for Distinguished and Exemplary Service.
Chris has been a regular commentator on NPR, CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, and CNBC. He’s also been featured in Variety, Forbes, Time, and The New York Times, and Inc.

This is an impressive book that is filled with some practical knowledge and readers found themselves taking notes on certain points that he was making. It’s written like a thriller and is very absorbing and is pretty easy to sit down and read. Some found that not only did their negotiation skills improved, but their social skills got better as well.
This is excellent work from him and there is quite a lot to learn from him, and he includes some practical and easy to read psychological techniques and tricks that you can use to persuade people to see things your way. It goes a long way to beefing up your skillset in negotiating with anybody, be they medical patients (getting them to take their meds) or negotiating with brands (while making sponsored videos).
