Raymond Buckland is a paranormal religion and spirituality author that is best known for introducing Wicca to the United States. The author was born in London in 1934 but in 1939, his family moved to Nottingham as the Second World War got underway.
It was while he was in his formative years of school that Buckland got interested in acting and theater a passion that he would pursue most of his life. It was also during these early years that he got introduced to the occult and spiritualism by his uncle who was a practicing spiritualist.
From the time he was introduced to the occult as a twelve-year-old, he read everything he could on the subject. He would soon become interested in related subjects including witchcraft, ghosts, magic, and ESP. Similar to acting, spirituality would become a passion that he would pursue right into adulthood.
Starting in 1951, he went to King’s College London and ultimately went to Brantridge Forest College where he got his doctorate degree in anthropology. It was also during this time that he got married to Rosemary his first wife and became a father.
In his early career, he had several positions and was also a member of the Royal Air Force for two years between 1957 and 1959.
In 1962 Raymond Buckland’s life changed and he set out on a path that would lead him toward notoriety. It was at this time that he moved his family to Long Island New York from the United Kingdom.
He was then an employee of the British Overseas Airways Corporation and with a lot of time on his hands he began reading the works of Gerald Gardner. It was also at this time that he developed a long-distance relationship with the author who would become his mentor.
Soon enough, Buckland and his wife were initiated by Gardner and Monique Wilson in the United Kingdom after which they introduced the Wicca tradition in the United States.
Raymond established a coven in Long Island at a time when the occult was becoming more popular in the US. He also established the First Museum of Magic and Witchcraft in the United States.
Raymond then began penning “A Pocket Guide to the Supernatural” his first work that was first published in 1969. He followed that up with several books on Wicca, the occult, and magic.
His works would become hugely popular and the success meant he was able to quit his job and devote much of his time to writing, the coven, and his teachings.
During the 1970s, Raymond Buckland moved to Virginia and New Hampshire where he began his new spiritual journey. There he established his own form of Wicca and began a correspondence course, teaching spirituality to more than 1000 students.
It was at this time that he published “The Tree: Complete Book of Saxon Witchcraft” while still teaching and attending festivals with the Wicca community. It was during the mid-1980s that he published his most famous work “Buckland’s Complete Book of Witchcraft” otherwise referred to informally as “The Big Blue Book.”
Ultimately, he began reconnecting with his love for theater and even performed stand-up theater. During this time, his writing began to move toward fiction as he wrote in several genres including works that showcased his love for the Victorian age such as The Bram Stoker Mysteries. He also penned science fiction and high fantasy.
Raymond Buckland’s health began to decline in 2015 as he was battling pneumonia and had recently had a heart attack. While he had told friends that he was keeping active and feeling much better, he had stopped doing public appearances and traveling great distances.
In 2017, he was reported as having edema in his lungs and started experiencing chest pain. He would ultimately pass on his sleep aged 83.
“Cursed in the Act” by Raymond Buckland is the first of the popular historical mysteries featuring Bram Stoker and Harry Rivers his trusted sidekick. The first adventure of the two is set in 1881 when the owner and star of the lyceum is a man named Henry Irving.
The latter is poisoned on the opening night of Hamlet when someone puts some toxic substance in his lemonade. It is only his insistence that the show has to go on and his cast iron constitution that prevents the opening night from turning into a total disaster.
But the horrible events will not let up as his understudy, a man named Irving dies after he is hit by a fast-moving carriage. Things only get worse when the young son of actress Ellen Terry goes missing and is reported to have been kidnapped.
Later on, the backdrop is unrolled and the biggest impediment to the show yet happens, as a severed head comes tumbling onto the stage. The police have been working hard to track down whoever is involved in the bizarre happening, but it does seem they are not efficient enough.
This gets Harry and Bram into the investigation that leads them to London’s dockyard warehouses and opium dens. It is there that they meet a man who encourages them to try voodoo in their efforts to catch the criminal.
Raymond Buckland’s novel “Dead for a Spell” continues to follow Bram Stoker who is ever surprised by supernatural incidents. Set in 1881, The Lyceum Theatre where he is employed is buzzing with news that Edwin Booth the American actor is going to be sharing the stage with Henry Irving their very own Shakespearean superstar.
However, Harry Rivers the stage manager is preoccupied with other matters. One of the regular actresses has gone missing and after he got a disturbing reading of tarot cards, Bram Stoker who is Harry’s boss is convinced that they may have to deal with something evil in the near future.
Soon enough, they find the body of a strange girl, and Stoker is proved right. At the murder scene are all manner of bizarre clues which Stoker believes point to an occult ritual.
Someone has been making a pernicious plot against the crew and cast of the Lyceum Theatre and if Harry will not be able to track down the culprit, it may turn out disastrous for the people he holds dear.
“A Mistake Through the Heart” by Raymond Buckland is another charming mystery that features Harry Rivers that was the theater manager under Bram Stoker. In this outing, he is a suspected vampire which just makes things more interesting.
At the opening of the novel, there is the bizarre death of one of the top actors at the Lyceum Theatre in London and the police are unsure if it is murder, suicide, or an accident.
Meanwhile, a figure believed to be a vampire makes the theatre start to hemorrhage its audience. Will Harry Rivers and Bram Stoker be able to determine if the city is being attacked by vampires while solving the mystery of the actor’s death?
