La’Tonya West is an American urban fiction author. She was born and raised in Fairfield, Virginia and is a proud mother of three kids, one boy and two girls. West draws her motivation from personal experiences, things she’s witnessed and everyday experiences.
In her first book in the side chic series, we get to learn that as long as you understand your role and stick to your lane, being a side chic isn’t something that’s hard, or is it? We are introduced to Lala, who’s been Tre’s side chic for two years, understands her role in this relationship and knows the fact that he has a baby mama and two kids; she shouldn’t interfere with the marriage.
Lala does not cause drama or give surprise visits, and Tre is appreciative that she does not cause drama like most side chics would. She is such a low-key and, in most cases, takes Tre’s family feelings into account before her own. At times she leaves town without saying too much to Tre, and she feels that since they are both grown up, they should do what they need to do without causing drama because she, too, knows how bad it can turn out to be. While Tre has a strong attraction towards Lala, he has vowed that he won’t lose his family for anyone or anything. But as much as Lala plays by the rules and continues to be the excellent side chic she is, will she be able to keep her cool once her feelings get involved?
La’Tonya West does a fantastic job of making all the characters in this series debut novel relatable and also does an excellent job of detailing each character’s point of view. It’s obvious there are lots of women out there able to relate to such a story because they have either known/heard or either been a side chic. Lala is not your typical side chic being all rah-rah or bringing drama in your face. She is low-key and understands her role in the relationship. As the story progresses, Lala goes through a lot and learns so much about growing up. One major lesson that Lala learns is also a lesson for the reader to learn- karma- because it always comes back to you, and when it hits Lala, she does not expect it. What will the outcome of all this be? Will Lala continue to be a side chic, or her feelings make her want more out of this relationship?
Nasty Secrets is the first book in a series by the same name. Published in 2011, it introduces us to Jasmine and her boyfriend, Nathan. The two seem to have everything going on perfectly. Her boyfriend is a hardworking man who’s always ready to give her everything she needs. Well, not anything because there’s something that Jasmine wants that not her boyfriend or any other man can give her. And that’s where Nathan’s sister, Erika, comes into play.
Erika has been facing tough times back in New York, and so her brother requested her to come and live with them for a while until she got everything back to normal. But turned out that was a big mistake. Erika is gay and does not shy away from showing her love and appreciation to other women. From the first time she meets Jasmine, they both realize that there’s something attracting them.
When Nathan goes on a business trip out of town, the two women begin exploring whatever has been brewing between them, and after one long steamy and satisfying night, the two are hooked. An explosive lustful romance begins, one that becomes harder to hide whenever they meet. Jasmine soon falls madly in love with Erika and vows to break things with her boyfriend, Nathan. She, however, does not want to hurt his feelings, but the fact is that she cannot change her feelings towards Erika. Nathan has been so caught up in his work and hasn’t even noticed something strange happening right in his home. Or has he? Could Nathan be hiding a secret as well? Could it be a secret much more dangerous than Jasmines?
The second book in the side chic series picks up where the first left off. We discover that Lala has finally given birth to twin daughters, and while she has no problems with sticking to her lane, all she needs is for Tre to realize that she has two other children and show some interest in them. She plays her side chic part pretty well, without causing drama and keeping her promises of not destroying what he has already with his sons mother as long as he too plays his part.
But being given excuses as to why he’s unable to do certain things or be there for her is pushing Lala to her breaking point. Will Lala be able to multitask the father and mother roles to her children, or will she realize that Tre is never willing to step up and take care of her babies the way she needs him to?
The second in the series is a beautiful read. We also encounter Tamika, introduced in the first book. She is just trifling as ever, smiles and pretends to be there for Kisha even though she is plotting some dirty schemes on her all along. She knows about Tre’s secrets and uses that to her advantage to get whatever she wants all along. Will her plans succeed, or will be become out of control for both of them? Kish is the ideal little house girlfriend, she stays with Tre from time to time, and knowing about his cheating ways, she takes him back all the time for the sake of their family. She makes sure that her sons are well taken care of, the house is neatly kept, and she does not often go out, so Tre knows where she is most of the time. Is Kisha the innocent woman she seems, or is she covering up a secret that could destroy her family?
La’Tonya West is definitely an author every reader should check out. She vividly paints clear pictures of her stories so that you can clearly imagine everything in your mind.
