Kes Gray is an English author of children’s fiction books. He is a bestselling and award-winning author with over 70 books for children under his name. Gray was born and raised in Chelmsford. He obtained his 6 O’ levels and 3 A’ levels from Great Baddow Comprehensive and later graduated from Kent University in Canterbury with a bachelor of arts degree in English and American Literature. Gray also has a diploma in advertising writing which saw him lay a foundation for his later writing career for children. In 2018 he was named the second bestselling picture book author and now boasts over 2 million copies of his stories sold worldwide.

Dog on a Frog is a picture book that talks about different animals and where each animal should sit. Despite this, the frog wants to change the rules of the game and rearrange where the animal should sit. For instance, the frog says that the dog should sit on a log rather than sitting on the frog. In return, the dog asks the frog where the bears should sit, and he responds that they should sit on the stairs.

Throughout the story, the frog intentionally names all insects with a rhyming word depending on where they should sit. An example is the crickets; they should sit on tickets while the moths should sit on clothes. There are a lot of rhyming words used throughout the book.

This picture book is intended for younger kids because they list funny things that each animal should sit on. For example, the pigs should sit on wigs, while boars should sit on oars. Younger children will enjoy reading this book because of the rhyming effect as the frog lists different things that each animal should sit on. Additionally, the illustrations in this book provide an imaginative picture for the younger kids.

Dog sit on a log is a good lesson book on rhyming words. You can have pupils work with each other and point out several rhyming phrases as they read this book. You can have the children find out what makes such words rhyming words. Additionally, you can have the kids share different rhyming words they find throughout the entire text and also have them play a scavenger hunt to find other words throughout the book that can be used as rhyming words. For example, frogs, logs, dogs etc.

Eat your peas by Kes Gray is a story about a little girl called Daisy who doesn’t like peas. While at the dinner table, Daisy’s mother tries everything to convince her daughter to eat her peas, But Daisy doesn’t like peas and doesn’t eat them. Her mother tries to bribe her with small things like skipping bath time and staying up late. But despite this, Daisy refuses to eat her peas, and her mother promises to be more elaborate. She promises her bikes, chocolate factories and more, but this doesn’t make Daisy want to eat her peas. But then she makes a funny suggestion to her mother that she will only eat the peas if the mother eats her Brussels, but then she doesn’t like Brussels.

This is a common problem for disliking certain foods, which makes this book an easy read and easy to relate to for children. The repetition in the story is a fun way for children to get involved in the story.

Anyone that does not like peas will sympathize with Daisy. There is a beautiful personification at the start of the book, where peas are said to be ganging up on Daisy. The story follows a simple and comedic pattern where Daisy always responds the same, “I don’t like peas.”

Her mother goes to extremes to make her eat peas, and it’s the high level of extremes that makes this story funny. It will resonate with most kids, too, because every parent wants their kids to eat healthy, including eating vegetables which are not the tastiest of foods among kids and most adults.

On the surface, this story may seem to be a just whimsical read, but there are plenty of skills and techniques that adults can use when reading it to children. For instance, the book follows are well-structured and sequential pattern. Children will finally find it normal to fact that Daisy is very strong and doesn’t give in to her mother’s temptations. The sequential element in the book is quite vital such that it allows methods of predictability from kids because when they shout, “I don’t like peas”, it means they already are predicting what Daisy is going to say.

Other skills that parents and teachers can utilize in this book include grouping different things into sets, counting, problem-solving and looking at units. Problem-solving is something that’s cross-curricular and a powerful tool that every child must be equipped with for science, math etc. Daisy takes enough time before coming up with a solution for her mother, and she is very clever in her proposition.

Eventually, like us, Daisy realizes that her mother will do anything to get her to eat the peas. Without giving spoilers, it’s important to say that this story culminates in a wonderful way, which is quite witty. Those who have read this book will agree that the story’s ending strongly correlates with real-life parenting skills and agree that sometimes we all need to be empathetic as parents. It’s pretty easy to ask someone to do something, but what you may view as simple can be quite a challenging task for someone else. The emergent message in the book is that working in a partnership is quite essential. Communicating and understanding each other is the foundation of creating solid bonds without children, irrespective of their age. This book would be an excellent read for reception or nursery classes.
