About Rhys Dylan

The Welsh author Rhys Dylan is extremely well regarded thanks to his immersive and engaging crime thriller novels. Grabbing readers from the outset, he holds their attention there, keeping it for the duration of the entire novel. Knowing his audience well at this point, he makes the most of his intriguing premises, really pushing them to their true full potential. Letting the stories essentially speak for themselves as well, he gives them a real sense of his personality, offering his own unique perspective of the mystery genre.

Not afraid to dive into more serious subject matter either, he’s never shied away from more challenging darker stories as well. This approach and dedication to his craft has secured his position as a household name for many readers all around the world. His work really speaks for itself in many ways, setting him apart from other writers in his field, giving his work a real sense of immediacy. This success is clearly evident in his sales too, as he has achieved a bestselling status on numerous occasion with his audience reaching far and wide.

Characters are something Dylan also works well with, creating fully three-dimensional personalities that really speak to the reader. Building strong protagonists who almost step out from the page, his work allows his audience to feel as if they’re there in the story. This approach also rings true with each of premises as well, as he effectively creates a sense of atmosphere and ambiance that fully immerses the reader. With so much more to come still, he isn’t going away any time soon either, as his writing career carries on growing from strength-to-strength.

Early and Personal Life

Born and raised in west Wales, Rhys Dylan grew up with a keen passion for both reading and writing, nurturing his love of storytelling from an early age. He would leave to study in London for a period of time, all the while continuing to refine and hone his craft as a writer. After this he’d return to Wales where he’d continue to write regularly, putting out work under a whole variety of different pen-names.

Drawing heavily on his surrounding environment, he’d set many of his books in the area he lived, using it for inspiration. Using the landscape of his birth as the backdrop for many of his thrillers, he’d create stories that were highly unique and personal to him. Currently living upon the edge of the Beacons in Wales to this day with his wife, he has a lot more planned for publication on the horizon.

Writing Career

Prior to writing under his own name, Rhys Dylan would write under numerous pen-names, writing for both children and adults. Reaching a wide audience globally, he’d prove himself to be enormously versatile in a variety of different genres and styles. Focusing on crime novels now, he also infuses his work with a dark sense of humor which many have come to highly appreciate as well.

The first novel that he’d write under his own name would come out in 2022 and it would be titled ‘The Engine House.’ It would also mark the first book in the ‘DCI Evan Warlow’ series of novels, paving the way for ‘Caution Death At Work’ and further novels to come out later that year. His mysteries would go on to become hugely popular, as the Warlow series would make the most of it Welsh setting, with more to follow.

The Engine House

Arriving in 2022 on the 6th of January, this came out on the Kindle platform, and would be met by an eager audience. It would start the ‘DCI Evan Warlow’ mystery thriller series, and it would be preceded by the short prequel novella ‘The Wolf Hunts Alone.’ This previous book would be released back in 2021 and would quickly setup the series, establishing the style and tone of the world and the character of Evan Warlow himself.

Taking DCI Evan Warlow out of his otherwise quiet retirement, two bodies turn up during a landslip along the coastal path of Pembrokeshire. Revealing the remains of missing people from eight years prior, Warlow was the original investigator working on the case. Now the killer is attempting to cover up the truth, and they’ll stop at nothing to hide what they’ve done, as Warlow works against the clock with his team to bring them to justice. Will he be able to find the killer in time, why exactly did they do it, and what is the real truth behind the engine house?

While there may have been an earlier novella setting the series up, this definitely works on its own as a great introduction to the series. Fully establishing the world of the franchise, it sets about creating a highly immersive and richly evocative ambiance that pulls the reader in. Grounding the characters, it’s down-to-earth and engaging on multiple different levels, allowing the reader to lose themselves within it.

Caution Death At Work

First released in 2022 on the 28th of February, this would originally come out on the Kindle publishing platform. The second book in the ongoing ‘DCI Evan Warlow’ mystery series, it would pave the way for two further thrillers to follow. ‘Ice Cold Malice’ and ‘Suffer the Dead’ would continue on later that same year, providing further stand-alone mysteries for the Welsh DCI to solve.

Once again working as a DCI, Evan Warlow is hesitant as he isn’t sure it’s time to return yet, and some others also agree. That’s when a mountain-biker is killed in the Brechfa forest, and another escapes severely injured, with all the evidence directing in one direction. Bad things have occurred in the woods before, and the killer is now attempting to cover their tracks after managing some unfinished business. Will they strike again though, why did they do it in the first place, and what will happen when it’s declared caution death at work?

Again this is another example of the Warlow mystery doing what it does extremely well, keeping the reader gripped every step of the way. There’s plenty of surprises on each turn of the page, making it easy to read, yet compellingly addictive at the same time. It doesn’t necessarily need to be read in order either, as it makes for a great stand-alone title with lots to offer the reader.

I have listened to hundreds of audible stories but this series of books had had me hooked since book 1. I am currently on book 10 and have listened to it in one day. I am addicted to these characters. I have never laughed so much whilst enjoying the crimes. I might be my age that helps with DS Jones quick comments. I am starting to worry that I’m getting to the end of the series.
I have bought the whole series for my sister as I know she will enjoy. Thank you Rhys.

I have listened to the first five books in the series and I am really enjoying them. However, audibles stops there and I cannot get the rest of the series. My eyesight is very poor so can’t read books. Why is only the first half of the series available on audibles? It is so very disappointing.

My local library has the first (The Engine House), third (Ice Cold Malice), fourth(Suffer the Dead) and eighth (A Body of Water) available on audible. Keep looking for them and they may show up. Does your library have reciprocal agreements with other localities?

This is the first book I have read by Rhys Dylan but it will not be my last. The Engine House was a Christmas gift from my son and I could not put the book down. His characters are so convincing they seemed real to me. A very enjoyable read indeed. Love the book. Thank you Rhys for the experience. Can’t wait to get another one of your stories.
