Michael Scott has published a total of 4 novel series’ in his career as an author, of which the Tales of the Bard series is considered to be one of the prominent ones. It consists of a total of 3 novels published between the years 1987 and 1988. The first novel of the series was called ‘Magician’s Law’ and was published as the Paperback edition in the year 1987. The plot of the novel opens up with the emergence of a strange figure from beneath the trees. He had a manlike shape and was taller than the main character of the novel, Paedur the Bard. When the strange man appeared in front of Paedur, he stopped in his tracks and ordered him to come forward and face him. The strange figure, known by the name Mannam, the Lord of the Dead had a very thin body similar to that of a sword and was covered in a cloak of withered and seared leaves from head to toe. From this interaction of Paedur the Bard with Mannam, the Lord of the Dead, began his adventurous and extraordinary journey. He gets confronted by the hideous figure of the Sovereign of the Silent Wood, with whom Paedur undergoes a perilous deal. As per the fulfillment of the deal, Paedur is allowed to travel to the magical and awesome realms of enchantment along with some brutal and terrific powers. The forces of the darkness were always present to threaten and engulf the enlightenment that he held very boldly. They were at his heels all the time and were looking for the chance of engulfing his enlightenment.
The second novel of the series was published by the Orbit publishing house in the year 1988 under the title ‘Demon’s Law’. The plot of the continues to deal with the main character of the series, Paedur the bard, who was the Champion of the Old Faith. In the opening sequence of the novel, Paedur tentatively steps across the fathomless gulf of the bridge situated between the two worlds of Life and Death. The people of different races are carried on a semblance of life in the silent Wood of the Dead, where the kings, warriors, priests and peasants are all living with an eternal parody of their living days in the world of Life, not knowing that there have been dead or a long time and their kingdoms have been dusted as well as their times have been forgotten. People believe that Mannam, the Lord of the Dead, likes to keep the finest men, bravest warriors, powerful magicians, wisest kings and the knowledgeable bards. He makes them live in his world according to the rules set by himself. However, no one is certain about the belief as none of those who went there have returned to tell about the wonders of the land of the Dead. They do not know whether Mannam deliberately takes the finest men from the living world or there is some other angle to this belief.
