Tananarive Due
Tananarive Due was born in 1966 and teaches Afrofuturism and Black Horror at UCLA and is a former Miami Herald columnist. She’s an executive producer on “Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror”. She and Steven Barnes (her collaborator/husband) penned “A Small Town” for “The Twilight Zone” on CBS All Access.

Due, a leading voice in black speculative fiction for over twenty years, has won an NAACP Image Award, an American Book Award in 2002 for “The Living Blood”, and a British Fantasy Award. She is a two time finalist for the Bram Stoker Award. And her writing’s been included in best-of-the-year anthologies.

“The Good House” is a stand alone novel and was released in 2003. A woman searches for the inherited power which can save her hometown from evil forces.

The home that once belonged to Angela Toussaint’s deceased grandma is so beloved that even the townspeople in Sacajawea, Washington refer to it as the Good House. All of that changes one summer, however, when one unexpected tragedy occurs behind closed doors, and the Toussaint’s family history, as well as future, is dramatically transformed.

Angela’s not returned to the Good House since Corey, her son, died there two years prior. However Angela is now ready to at last go back to her hometown and go beyond the grave in order to uncover the truth about Corey’s death. Could it be related to a horrifying entity Angela’s grandma battled seven decades ago? And what about all the other senseless calamities which Sacajawea has seen in recent times? Has Angela’s grandma, an African American woman reputed to have “powers” of some kind, put a curse on the whole community?

“My Soul to Keep” is the first novel in the “African Immortals” series and was released in 1997. Jessica marries David, and he is everything that she wants in a family man: ever youthful, brilliant, and attentive. But she still feels that there is something out of reach. Soon, while people close to Jessica start meeting mysterious, violent deaths, David makes this unimaginable confession: over four hundred years ago, he and the other members of an Ethiopian sect traded in their humanity in order to never die, and it is a secret that he has to protect at any cost.

Now, his immortal brethren have decided that David has to return and leave his family behind in Miami. Instead, David vows to invoke some forbidden ritual in order to keep Jessica and his daughter around with him forever.

“My Soul to Keep” traps Jessica between the desperation of immortals that wish to rob her of her soul.

“The Living Blood” is the second novel in the “African Immortals” series and was released in 2001. Jessica Jacobs-Wolde has survived the worst that any wife or mom could ever endure somehow: the deaths of her first daughter and her husband. However now, four years later, not only is the nightmare still continuing, it might’ve just got started.

Jessica’s learned the horrifying truth behind the legacy that her husband left to Fana, their second daughter. It’s a legacy preordained a thousand years before her time and drenched in the powerful lifeblood which courses through her veins.

While young Fana starts displaying unearthly abilities which are rapidly spiraling out of control, she is the target of those that will stop at nothing to exploit these powers of hers. Along with the unwitting touchstone in some ancient supernatural battle whose outcome might decide all of humanity’s fate.

“Blood Colony” is the third novel in the “African Immortals” series and was released in 2008. An ancient group of African immortals facing one of the most challenging issues of our time: the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

Glow is a drug said to heal just about any illness, and gets its power from immortals’ blood, and it is up to the Blood Colony, which is a tiny yet powerful group of immortals, to keep the supplies coming so that AIDS and other diseases get wiped out.

Fana Wolde, age seventeen, the one immortal born with the Living Blood. Her wounds heal immediately and can read minds. When her mortal best friend gets imprisoned by Fana’s own family, she helps her friend escape and together they run away from Fana’s protected home in the state of Washington in order to join the Underground Railroad of Glow peddlers.

However Fana has more than just her parents to worry about: Glow peddlers are getting murdered by a violent, century old sect with ties to the Vatican. Now, as Fana’s most vulnerable, she’s getting hunted to fulfill some ancient blood prophecy which could lead to numerous deaths. As her people hunt for Fana and race to unravel the unknown sect’s mysterious origins, Fana has to learn to face the lethal forces, or she and everybody that she loves is going to die.

“The Between” is a stand alone novel and was released in 2021. One man risks his sanity and soul in order to save his family from malevolent forces.

When Hilton was just a boy, his grandma sacrificed her life in order to save him from drowning. Three decades later, he starts suspecting that he wasn’t ever meant to survive that accident, and dark forces are working hard to rectify this mistake.

Hilton’s wife, the one and only elected African American judge in all of Dade County, Florida, starts getting racist hate mail from a guy she prosecuted once, Hilton gets obsessed with keeping his family safe. The demons lurking just outside are matched by his own internal horrors, these macabre nightmares, which are more disturbing and intense than anything he’s ever experienced before. Are these strange dreams the dark imaginings of a guy losing his hold on his own sanity? Or are they actually harbingers of horrible events to come?

While Hilton battles against the more horrifying enemy stalking his sleep and the sociopath that threatens to destroy his family, the line between fantasy and reality dissolves.

This is the story about a man desperately hang onto the life and the people he loves while slowly losing himself.
