Tirzah Price
Most of author Tirzah Price’s life choices have been motivated by her desire to read as many books as humanly possible. She grew up on a farm in Michigan, where she started trying to read every single book she could get her hands on began.
Price holds an MFA in Writing for Children & Young Adults from Vermont College of Fine Arts, and has worked as a librarian and independent bookseller.
She is a contributing editor at Book Riot, where she can be found recommending books on the site, podcasts, newsletters, and social media accounts.
When she’s not reading, writing, or thinking about YA books, she splits her time between knitting enough socks to last through the fierce winters and experimenting in the kitchen.
Tirzah has loved the Young Adult genre since she first discovered Meg Cabot at the age of twelve, and she jokes that she never grew out of that love. However she thinks she enjoys it so very much because it all feels intense and new and very important in Young Adult stories. In a lot of ways she felt like her teen years were pretty average if not wholly boring, so reading about different teen experiences provides a nice escape, too.
She is a full on enemies-to-lovers fan girl. Her favorite teen movie is “10 Things I Hate About You”, and she believes there’s something very exciting about watching two characters that dislike one another begin developing feelings for each other.
She believes that Jane Austen’s characters truly lend themselves to being amateur sleuths, albeit in rather surprising ways. Tirzah’s always loved mysteries, and really enjoyed the miniseries adaptation of “Death Comes to Pemberley” by PD James, so pondering what Lizzie may care about and how she’d go about solving a mystery was a ton of fun. And even though Austen’s novels aren’t mysteries but social stories, it does not hurt that she typically has excellent characters which are simple to cast as villains.
“Pride and Prejudice”, despite being Austen’s second published work, has always felt to Tirzah to be her most widely read and best known book, so it seemed the natural starting point if one was going to pen an entire series. As far as her research goes, Tirzah re-read the source material, and did a ton of research into the justice and legal systems of the Regency and Georgian periods. Their idea of crime, and the ways society would deal with it, was much different than the law enforcement we see these days.
She also did a ton of research into the details of this time period and their everyday life. Even though her novel is ahistorical in a few notable ways (like Lizzie would have no hope of getting called to the bar in the early 1800s), she still wanted to ground the tale in this time period as much as she could.
Tirzah’s a very detailed outliner to start with, and because she’d never tackled a mystery before, she went all out outlining “Pride and Premeditations” down to the scene using an Excel spreadsheet. It was very helpful because it helped her out in keeping track of various threads of note where and when to tease out the mystery elements. But the mystery truly started coming together during the revision process. She did two rounds of revisions before her editor saw the manuscript, and another two rounds with her editorial feedback.
Tirzah had a lot of fun as she writing a mystery that retold “Pride and Prejudice”, and she likes describing it as a retelling that keeps the characters from the original novel yet threw the plot out. Most, if not all, of everybody’s favorite characters from the original story are still here, yet they’re in very different scenarios and a Regency London setting.
“Pride and Premeditation” is the first novel in the “Jane Austen Murder Mysteries” series and was released in 2021. A scandalous murder shocks London high society, and Lizzie Bennet (a seventeen year old aspiring lawyer) jumps at this opportunity to prove herself, despite the interference of Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, who is the stern young heir to the prestigious firm Pemberley Associates.
Lizzie, having become convinced the authorities have the wrong person in custody, vows to solve this murder all on her own. However while the case, as well as her feelings for Darcy, get more complex, Lizzie learns that this dream job of hers could make her happy, yet it may also get her killed.
One of Austen’s classic novels getting a murder mystery makeover in this thrilling and romantic novel.
This is a witty and clever, compulsively readable and perfectly written, and wholly unputdownable read. This is an entertaining page turner, and is sure to delight readers of any genre.
“Sense and Second-Degree Murder” is the second novel in the “Jane Austen Murder Mysteries” series and was released in 2022. When Elinor Dashwood, an eighteen year old aspiring scientist, finds that her beloved dad slumped over the desk in his office study, she knows that his death means dire straits for the Dashwood women.
Making things worse, an outdated will entails his whole estate: including Norland & Company, the private investigation firm that her little sister Marianne worked as her dad’s protege and partner, to their half-brother and his haughty wife. And they waste zero time in forcing the Dashwoods out of their home and into some cramped apartment on London’s Barton Street.
However before they leave, the Dashwood sisters make a stunning discovery: there’s a suspicious substance in their dad’s teacup, one that can only be described as poison. And poison always points to murder, as Marianne’s dad taught her.
It might be dangerous, could potentially ruin their reputations, and most importantly: it’s not going to bring their dad back. However if the Dashwood sisters are able to combine their talents and bring their dad’s killer to justice, it might just bring each of them some comfort. Might even lead to love, as well.
Readers loved the dynamics of the sisterly relationships in the novel, which combines the charm and wit of Jane Austen with the sleuthing and mystery of Agatha Christie.
