Cornelia Funke was born on December 10, 1958, in Dorsten, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. In school, she was good and liked writing essays although they were too long. In her early life, she had many visions of being a pilot, an astronaut and living with the Red Indians. After she had completed school, she studied education as she wanted to be a social worker. She had a wealth of knowledge on children but realized she could not live without her gifts of drawing and writing. During her years in social work, her primary focus was on working with children who came from deprived backgrounds. Having worked with such children, she was able to discover the types of books that could catch their imaginations

At her young age, she was a lover of fantasy and at the age of 28, she decided to write her books. On writing

Funke emphasizes that the first crucial starting point of an excellent book is an idea, which comes from nowhere and everywhere. In most of her books, she finds children being in very stressful situations as seen in The Thief Lord. For aspiring authors, Funke challenges them to read more than they do now and be curious. In her literature, she deals with themes in an inspiring way. Funke is always willing and ready to celebrate the strengths of the children from their ability to try to act like adults.
