S.M. Gaither is an American author of fantasy and romance novels. She is the author of the Shadows and Crowns series, the Serpents and Kings series, the Shift Chronicles series, and the Drowning Empire series.
When Gaither was a kid she would often play video games like Final Fantasy and read books instead of doing her homework. Her adult life wasn’t much different and she made it her life’s goal to write books. The author has said that she wants for the books to help distract others from their life’s obligations as well so they can be similar to how she was as a child and thus create some like-minded procrastinators.
Gaither makes her home in North Carolina with her husband, their daughter, and their pet dog. When she is not writing or reading, she enjoys spending time in the mountains near her home.
The Song of the Marked is the first book in the Shadows and Crowns series. Casia Greythorn only cares about two things: completing her latest job and earning enough to buy medicine for her mentor that is keeping her alive. She gets a great job offer from the king and the job is too good to pass up. She’ll have to work with Captain Elander, the arrogant, mysterious right-hand to the king and that is something that she is not looking forward to. Her new partner infuriates her, but the mission seems simple. They two are brought together to investigate the origins of the plague that’s been ravaging their empire and to find a cure for it. In this world there is nothing that simple though with old magic and meddling gods throughout the land. The bodies are piling up with strange monsters wreaking havoc on the realms. Now, the two will need to work together in order to protect this world as there is something ancient and evil stirring in the shadows.
The Shadows and Crowns series continues with A Twist of the Blade. The book picks up after the events of the first book as Casia is trying to regain control. She will need to master the magic as it will take her and her friends on a quest deep into a southern empire filled with deadly foes and unlikely allies. The foundations of the Kethran Empire are continuing to crumble with the king emperor clinging to his crown. Casia’s every step is stalked by monsters and soldiers as they want to stop her from her destiny. However, he might not even be the greatest threat to her. That threat lies much closer in someone she once felt close to.
The Queen of Cursed Things is the first book in the Serpents and Kings series. The High King of Sundolia vanquished the Serpent clan decades ago and was able to drive them out of the empire. The once powerful Serpent clan is reduced to nothing more than legends spoken of in frightened whispers, but they did not go away easily and they did not leave peacefully. The Serpent clan left behind a parting gift that left curses in the land itself. The curses have laid dormant for years until Alaya, a woman who shouldn’t exist, wakes one of them. Then she wakes another.
Alaya has a hidden Serpent mark which has given her this ability, but now she finds herself exiled from her village. Her only choice is to find the truth about her lost clan and all of the curses they left behind. She seeks to learn more about her true home and the power that was stolen from the Serpent goddess herself. The power could overthrow a tyrannical king and end his wars. The crown prince of Sundolia claims that he wants to help her stop those wars so that he can undo the horrors that his father has created. The two will need to find a way to trust each other if they want to succeed, but the closer they get to success – the more complicated things become.
The Serpents and Kings series continues with The King of Burning Skies. The book picks up after the events of the first book as the Dragon clan has joined forces with the bloodthirsty king. The crown prince is running out of options to keep the people he loves safe. If he wants to save this world he’ll need to look for help from one of the exiled Dragons, a woman who could either ruin him or save him. Alaya is prepared to use her powers to hurt the ones who have betrayed her, but she still wants to bring peace to this world.
Descendant is the first book in the Shift Chronicles series. Alex is left infected and confused after an attack by a werewolf. She is surrounded by strangers who all say they want to help her, but she is not sure who to trust. One of them is Kael who is infuriating, angry, and too hot for his own good. He’s also a man with secrets and a dark past that could turn her whole life upside down. The only thing that is keeping the human population safe in this world is a pact that Alex’s grandfather started and one that only Alex can now break. A break in the pact will mean a war within the shifter world, but refusing to break it could cost her the most important person in her life. What side will she stand on?
The series later continued with The Shift Chronicles: The Next Generation. The first book in the continuing series is Blood and Wolf. Elle has suppressed her magic and her shifter abilities in an attempt to keep the curse that gives her the power to rip the world apart. Instead, she trains with manmade weapons and does her best not to attract the attention of the Supernatural Council. One day she loses control and finds herself on the run from enemies who want to use her to break down the barriers that protect the Earth. Instead, she will set off on a quest to make those walls permanent.
