James E. Wisher is an American fantasy and science fiction author. He began writing in high school and could read anything that he found.
His work includes The portal War Series, The Aegis Of Merlin Series, the Soul Force Saga series, among others.
Darkness Rising
Darkness Rising is the debut novel in the Soul Force Saga series. The story follows Damien St. Cloud, the young hero and the Citadel commander’s son. Damien’s father is a warlord and can use his internal body magic to strengthen his skin, bone and muscles.
Damien has more power than anyone else, but he still can’t use it. He has tried to be a warlord for a long time, but he can’t harden his skin in class like the rest. He often breaks his bones during testing, and for some unknown reason, he isn’t able to use his soul force like the other warlords. This makes him mocked and bullied, and his father views him as a failure. He is good at everything else but fails when it comes to using powers.
This goes on until one day, a sorcerer shows up at the school and instantly recognizes Damien as his fellow sorcerer. He clarifies that sorcerers can use their magic outside their bodies instead of inside. Damien is then sent to learn how to be a sorcerer with no arguments or doubt. It turns out that the sorcerer is one of the most powerful ones he has ever seen. He is even more powerful than the master sorcerers who’ve been practising for many years.
All that time during his training as a warlord, no one has ever realized that his soul force is the complete opposite of what they expect him to do. His training as a warlord for a long has made him become physically fit, and since the sorcerers don’t go to the gym like the warlords, he turns out to be the strongest in school.
The school bully challenges him into a fight and still wins the battle as everyone watches. The story is a wonderfully woven fantasy story with fantastic lead and support characters. It’s about a trained warrior who later discovers that he was not meant to be a sword fighter but a sorcerer instead. Damien makes an entry into the world of magic, war intrigue and death.
At that time, a dark and ancient evil is rising once more, and it intends to destroy everything Damien values. After spending quite some time learning how to harness his power, together with his warrior sister, they are involved in the killing a demon someone has remembered.
Will Damien and his sister succeed in exposing the evil and saving their kingdom?
Damien chooses the court sorcerer to be his mentor to help him become a full sorcerer. At some point, he saves the king’s life in an assassination attempt and is later sent as a bodyguard to a young female diplomat who happens to be his mentor’s daughter. When they go out to deal with the rebellion of some Barons, they uncover a series of evil connected with the demon Damien killed in the past.
The action and intrigue pull the reader right into the story from the first page. The storyline is full of adventure and is explained in depth. James Wisher gave the reader the right measure of details so that they are not left with many questions but with enough of them to crave the next installment.
Be sure to come across some action, adventure, love and friendships. The story is fast-paced with excellent characters that leave the readers wanting to know more about them.
The Impossible Wizard
The Impossible Wizard is the first installment of The Aegis of Merlin urban fantasy series. In early times, everyone believed that men couldn’t perform magic until one day it happened.
The story features a young man named Conryu Koda with modest ambition, and all he desires is specailise in bikes and practice Kung Fu. In this society, women are the only ones who are believed to have the ability to become wizards. Before going to college, teenagers are tested to check whether they have enough capacity to use magic.
The real test is mainly for girls because boys have no magic but are still tested. Even though only girls are believed to use magic, the boys are tested too as part of the routine.
Conryu’s simple dreams vanish during the testing when he turns out to be a potential wizard despite being a male. Apart from owning magic, it also turns out that the amount of magic he can use is far more than anyone has ever heard of.
The department of magic declares that a male wizard has been found and that draws the attention of the Le Fay Society, which happens to be a secret group of wizards who view men as animals and now sees Conryu as an abomination.
He is proof that their magic theories no longer exist and interfere with everything when he turns out to have a very high level of magic. No one is able to explain this rare occurrence; that’s why they see it as an aberration, and Conryu gets in danger.
Society starts making efforts just to ensure that they see Conryu dead. Everyone from the wizard cults to the religious zealots in the community tries to kill conryu. Wisher has done an excellent job of crafting a complex world where magic is real and can only be used by women. He has created a strong matriarchal society that exercises powers in government and all the sectors of the society.
The Impossible Wizard is an excellent start of the fantasy series, and even though it starts, the pace increases with the pages. Conryu is a likable character, and he has all the confusion most teenagers have when training with their father.
The story grabs the reader’s attention from the beginning with the author’s great premise and characters. What will really happen to Conryu?
