Betty Neels
Evelyn Jessy “Betty” Neels was a prolific British author of more than 134 romance novels starting in the year 1969 and continuing until she died, into her 90th year. All of these books were published by Harlequin or Mills & Boon. Her work is known for being especially chaste.
Her books have many recurring themes. The main female and male characters often get brought together by circumstances before their love has a chance to flourish. The male protagonist was often a Dutch surgeon. While the heroine was typically either a “splendidly built” queen-sized lady or a Cinderella. A character would often have an expertise in antiques. And family pets are also common.
She was insistent that these Dutch surgeons were not based on her husband, however upon an amalgam of many of the doctors that she met while she was nursing in Holland.
She was born on September 15, 1909 in Leyton to a family with firm roots in Civil Service. She spent her childhood and her youth in Devonshire. She was sent off to boarding school, and then went to train to become a nurse, gaining both her State Registered Nurse (SRN) and State Certificate of Midwifery (SCM).
In the year 1939, she got called up to the Territorial Army Nursing Service (TANS), and was sent on to France with the Casualty Clearing Station which was made up of eight nursing sisters (including Betty), and up to a hundred men until the invasion of France in 1940. During the invasion, all of the nursing sisters were able to escape in the charge of an army major, undertaking a lengthy and horrifying journey to Boulogne in an ambulance. They were quite fortunate to be put on the last hospital ship to be departing.
She got commissioned into the TANS as a Sister on May 30, 1941. Later on, she worked in Northern Ireland and Scotland. While in Scotland, she met a Dutchman, called Johannes Meijer. They got married in the year 1942 and in 1945, they had a daughter, named Charlotte.
The couple lived in London, and later moved to the Netherlands, where they spent thirteen years, where she continued her nursing career. When the family went back to England, she continued her nursing. When she at last retired, she’d reached the post of Night Superintendent.
Betty’s hobbies included animals, reading, old buildings, and, of course, writing. Her writing career began almost by accident, since there was actually very little in her background to even suggest she may eventually become a much-loved novelist.
It all started when she overheard a woman in her local library bemoaning the lack of good romance novels. Even though she’d retired from nursing, her mind didn’t have any intention of vegetating. So she got herself a typewriter and developed what was to become a fantastic loving relationship with her millions of adoring readers all around the world.
She died peacefully in a hospital at the age of 91 on June 7, 2001.
“Saturday’s Child” is a stand alone novel that was released in the year 1972. Abigail worked hard for a living. And was expecting to go on earning her living since no guy had shown any signs of wanting to marry her. Least of all that mysterious Professor Dominic van Wijekelen.
He certainly admired her nursing skills, and confidently asked her to take on his private cases, which took her from London on to Holland then Spain. However all he seemed to feel for her was intense dislike. Did he not trust women? Or was she too plain? Whatever the reason, there was very little that she could do about any of it.
“Cassandra by Chance” is a stand alone novel that was released in the year 1973. He only needed her as a nurse, not as a woman.
Benedict van Manfeld was one of the most surliest, most unfriendly guys that Cassandra had ever met in her life. However when she learned that he was a brilliant Dutch surgeon that severely damaged his vision during some accident, her attitude changed.
He asked her to go off to Holland with him and be his nurse. She agreed, and soon started feeling something much deeper than mere sympathy for him. However with Paula, his close friend, close by, why should he even notice Cassandra?
“The Hasty Marriage” is a stand alone novel that was released in the year 1977. Laura had always been used to taking second place to Joyce, her pretty little sister. If Joyce wanted it, she got it. It was, therefore, no surprise to Laura that when she fell in love with Reilof van Meerum, the attractive Dutch doctor, he picked Joyce instead.
However when Joyce walked out on him to marry some other, much richer guy, Reilof asked Laura to marry him. He needed a wife, and Laura, so it seemed, would do just as well as anybody else. So she accepted, however could she truly expect to be happy at all with a guy that didn’t love her?
“Winter Wedding” is a stand alone novel that was released in the year 1979. Would she ever have a proper marriage of her own? Some folks may believe that Emily Seymour was a tad prim and proper.
Emily preferred to think of herself as sensible. Unfortunately, all of the good sense in the whole world could not stop her from falling in love with Professor Renier Jurres-Romeijn.
This professor hardly seemed to even notice her, though. He was much too busy making his plans for his winter wedding. However who exactly was intended bride?
“Judith” is a stand alone novel that was released in the year 1980. After the hustle of the huge London hospital where she was working, Judith found it a rather pleasant change to be offered a private job looking after Lady Cresswell, a charming patient, in the Lake District.
Her patient gave her zero trouble whatsoever, which is more than can be said about her son, the rather disagreeable Professor Cresswell. He appeared to have taken an immediate dislike of Judith. Which is a dislike Judith returned with interest, to be quite honest. And now he was showing up to ruin their pleasant holiday in Portual.

Hello – that one is an omnibus, and we don’t list those. The story by Betty within it is called The Mistletoe Kiss and is listed above. Cheers 🙂
