About W.R. Gingell

The Tasmanian author W.R. Gingell is well known for writing intelligent and highly engaging fantasy novels. Featuring innovative and interesting concepts, she sets herself apart from other writers within her field, instantly grabbing the reader from the outset. Knowing her audience well, she really manages to create work that resonates on a personal level, fully allowing them to immerse themselves in her stories. This has progressed over time, as she has very much become her own writer, saying exactly what it is that she wants to say.

Letting her work speak for itself, she really manages to creates a style that is very much her own, pushing her ideas to their fullest. This approach has seen a level of authenticity within her work that is quite unlike any other, speaking directly to the reader almost. Setting herself apart from other writers within her field, she very much is a singular author with her own voice and tone. There’s a lot residing in each of her books too, as the feature worlds that really come to life for the reader off of the page.

Her characters are very well drawn too, making for fully three-dimensional personalities that speak directly to the reader. They also stay with the audience long after they’ve put the book down, not going away, and giving them a lot to think about. This honesty is coupled with her imaginative worlds that are easy for the reader to get lost in, finding themselves exploring it fully. With lots more to come too, she definitely is not stopping this any time soon either, as her writing career carries on growing upwards and onwards.

Early and Personal Life

Born and raised in Cairns in Australia, and she’d grow up with a keen passion for all things literature related. Focusing on fantasy novels in particular, she would begin to develop her style over time, creating a voice that was very much her own. Constantly looking for new ideas and inspiration from the world around her, she’d take everything, continually putting it all back into her work.

In time she would come to really create her own voice, allowing her to build worlds of her own within her novels. Spending most of her own free time reading, she’s a highly inspired author with a lot to say and offer through her work. Continuing to write to this very day, Gingell still has a lot more to come yet, with plenty more books planned for release upon the horizon.

Writing Career

Largely producing urban fantasy novels, Gingell would become well established for the way she would reinterpret fairy-tales for a modern day audience. Aiming it all at a Young Adult audience, she would find her audience, resonating clearly with her readers in a straightforward and articulate manner. Getting to the heart of precisely what it is that she wants to say, Gingell has also worked in the science-fiction genre as well.

Starting out back in 2014, she would begin with the novel ‘A Time Traveller’s Best Friend,’ which would also start up a series of the same name. Also that same year she would release the fantasy novel ‘Masque’ as well, which would fit into the ‘Two Monarchies Sequence’ collection of books. Publishing a lot of Young Adult Fantasy fiction over the years, she’d produce numerous series, and she continues to do so to this very day.

Masque

Originally published on the Kindle platform, this was first brought out back in 2014 on the 16th of December to much acclaim. One of the early books from Gingell, it would fit chronologically into the ‘Two Monarchies Sequence’ series of novels, working with a self-contained stand-alone narrative. Fitting in-between books three and four, it provides a solid murder mystery taking place in a fantasy setting and realm, aimed at a wide age range.

Using strong characters throughout, this book works really well on a number of different levels, making for an engaging and entertaining story. The story itself is different, in that whilst it uses a murder mystery as its central plot, it really manages to take it in a different and unexpected direction. With its world-building as well, it also really works, creating a fully developed universe for each of the individual characters to explore and inhabit.

The Annual Ambassadorial Ball is underway in Glause, and the New Civet’s Ambassador daughter Lady Isabella Farrah is feeling particularly jubilant. It’s here that she meets Lord Pecus within the library, as he appears to be a charming gentleman, but a curse has meant his mask hides a beastly face. Meanwhile Lord Topher has fallen for an older woman, whilst a murder has taken place, with Lady Isabella’s friend Raoul having been killed in a case of espionage gone wrong. Can they all solve the case together, what will become of each of them, and who exactly is behind the masque?

The First Chill of Autumn

First published on the 31st of May in 2016, this would arrive through the Kindle platform, as W.R. Gingell would publish it herself. The third and final book in the ‘Shards of a Broken Sword’ trilogy of novels, it would provide an overall conclusion to all three of them. As the final instalment it’s best that they’re read in order to get the most out of the series, as the work as a complete trilogy.

It’s not all that apparent to everyone that Llassar is an otherwise occupied country, and Fae has, following the birth of the crown princess, begun to filter back into the land. Fifteen years after the princess Dion ferch Alawn fled though, the entire land remains under the control and dominion of the Fae. Now Dion is returning, but on the way her carriage breaks down and she sees what Llassar actually looks like as an enslaved and oppressed land trapped. Will she accept the deference to the Fae, can she make it home in one piece, and what will become of the first chill of Autumn?

Concluding the fantasy trilogy of novels, this provides a satisfying sense of closure to all of them, giving the reader exactly what they wanted. There’s a lot here for both fans of the series and those that enjoy fantasy in general to deeply immerse themselves in and appreciate. Finishing with a somewhat different pace to the previous two books, the characters and the world-building remain steadfast throughout.
