Kate McMullan
As soon as she could, Kate McMullan began reading her way through the Children’s Room shelves at their local public library in St. Louis, Missouri, where she was born on January 16, 1947. Kate would carry her books home, get settled with a dog or cat or her guinea pigs on her lap, and just read for hours at a time.
Her favorites were Nancy Drew mysteries, Greek myths, Pippi Longstocking, and any animal stories, but only if the animals didn’t die. She also read Little Women, which was sad but acceptable if the people died and The Borrowers, which was about tiny little people that lived behind the walls in houses. She loved comic books as well, along with Mad Magazine. When she would be asked what she wanted to be when she grew up, she would answer with “a reader”.
After college, she taught fourth grade in an inner-city Los Angeles school and on an American Air Force base located in Germany. Each day after lunch ended, she would read to her students, and over time began wondering if she could write books like the ones she would read aloud to her class. She tried, however after spending the day teaching, she didn’t have much energy left over for writing. So she decided to move to New York City, because she had heard that’s where writers lived, and got a publishing job, which she found to be less tiring than teaching.
Kate edited by day and wrote during the night. Some nights she went out with a wonderful illustrator named Jim McMullan. On their first date, he picked her up from her apartment, looked through her bookshelves and pulled three books out with covers he had illustrated. How could she possibly resist him? Within just a year, they had gotten married.
She kept on reading. When her and Jim’s daughter was born, she read to her nonstop. One hot summer in Sag Harbor, they would keep cool curled up on this old couch on the porch with Laura Ingalls Wilder’s “The Long Winter”.
Kate also continued to write, a Greek Mythology series, stories about the Classroom Guinea Pig (named Fluffy and who would never die), books set in a medieval school for slaying dragons, and picture books that Jim McMullan illustrated.
“Have a Hot Time, Hades!” is the first novel in the “Myth-O-Mania” series and was released in the year 2002. Dad’s gut was so huge that it was not crowded, even with the five of them down there. Of course, every now and then, they would get on each other’s nerves.
Hestia was always cleaning the place up. Poseidon would always try to organize swimming meets. Hera was the bossy one, telling the rest of them what to do. However Demeter was certainly the oddest of the bunch, always going on and on about her desire to plant a small vegetable garden. They were family, however. They all grew up in their Dad’s belly together.
When Hades and his siblings were born, the Ruler of the Universe and their dad, Cronus, swallowed them all whole, only because there was this prophecy that said one of his kids would be mightier than him. Could Hades and all his sisters and brothers overthrow their big, bad father and take the universe over? It’s sure to be a hot time, Hades!
“Two Good Friends” is the second novel in the “Pearl and Wagner” series and was released in the year 2004. Meet Pearl, who is a hardworking rabbit, and Wagner, who is a daydreaming mouse. While at school, impress the judge at the science fair, they build a robot together, tell each other the truth at all times.
However friendship ain’t always easy. Sometimes a robot doesn’t turn out exactly the way it is supposed to, and sometimes a pair of green boots is all it takes to cause a fight. Through all of it, Wagner and Pearl show that they know how to make up and remain good friends no matter what.
“Three Secrets” is the third novel in the “Pearl and Wagner” series and was released in the year 2009. Pearl and Wagner have returned and are full of secrets. Wagner tells Pearl this one embarrassing secret, and Pearl tells Wagner a surprising secret, while Lulu tells Wagner a secret which turns out not to be a secret whatsoever.
During a school field trip and at a birthday party, Wagner and Pearl learn that some secrets are able to bring friends closer together, while others are able to cause all kinds of issues. In the end, there is no secret that will come between Pearl and Wagner!
“Four Eyes” is the fourth novel in the “Pearl and Wagner” series and was released in the year 2010. There is an eye toast, no. Eye test today at school, however Wagner just cannot see the board. Like Pearl tells him, it is time for glasses! However Wagner just hates his new glasses, as they make him look like he is a guppy, and a mean bully calls him Four Eyes.
Wagner vows never wear his specs again, until Pearl and all of his buddies give themselves inspired new nicknames like his. All of a sudden, Four Eyes has got a nice ring to it, and being able to see ain’t so bad either. The book illustrates how a best friend and a new point of view can change everything.
“For This Land” is the second novel in the “Meg’s Prairie Diary” series and was released in the year 2013. Meg Wells is joined by the rest of her family out on the Kansas prairie, where they battle it out alongside some Abolitionists in order to keep Kansas a free state.
Meg and her family’s new life is quickly jeopardized by not just the struggle against slavery and those that want Kansas to be a slave state, however also this devastating fire which threatens to destroy their home. However Meg’s own strong spirit helps her in overcoming the hardships of living on the prairie.
