Michael Hiebert is a Canadian author.
Michael Hiebert was born on March 31, 1967 in Surrey, Canada. He is the author of many different short stories and novels. His work has won awards and he is known for writing the Alvin, Alabama series of fictional mystery novels and the debut novel in that series, Dream with Little Angels.
He has written the seven-part serial thriller The Rose Garden Arena Incident as well as a collection of his short stories titled Sometimes the Angels Weep. He has been the winner of the Surrey International Writer’s Conference’s distinguished “Storyteller Award”, winning it two years in a row. He also wrote the story “My Lame Summer Journal by Brandon Harris, Grade 7”, which turned out to be noted by the famed author Joyce Carol Oates as being among the top fifty mystery stories that were published in the book “The Best American Mystery Stories”.
The author has three children. He also has a dog named Chloe. He resides in the British Columbia region of Canada in the Eastern Lower Mainland. He describes it as being wet and cold during the winter season and warm and occasionally wet as well during the summer. There are also plenty of animals roaming around through his backyard, as the author has seen deer, bears, and cougars. He also collects books and has a lot of them, enough so that moving is not an enjoyable task.
Michael Hiebert is the creator and author of the Detective Leah Teal series of fictional novels. This series first got started in 2013 with the publication of Dream with Little Angels. It was followed the next year by Close to the Broken Hearted. The third novel in the series is A Thorn Among the Lilies and is followed by Sticks and Stones. It is also called the Alvin, Alabama series.
Dream with Little Angels is the first novel in the Detective Leah Teal series by Michael Hiebert. This is the story of a small town in the south that goes through tragedy and one woman’s attempt to try and bring closure to a mystery, and the effect that this has on a young boy that is coming of age during the middle of all this chaos.
Ruby Mae Vickers supposedly vanished just over a decade ago. When that happened, Abe Teal had not yet been born. In Alvin, Alabama, people spent month after month searching for the girl, only to find her body. Ruby was dead under a local willow tree, and people have generally avoided speaking about her or the case ever since.
The sole detective in Alvin is Abe’s mother, and Leah did her best to avoid broaching the topic with her son. Then another girl from town disappears. Mary Ann Dailey was 14 years old and going home on the bus after school when she suddenly was nowhere to be found. Fearing for her life, the residents search the forests and the creeks with no results.
Tiffany Michelle Yates also goes missing just a few days after that. Abe glimpsed her hours previous to her disappearance, having spotted her with a pink dress on and holding a cone of ice cream in her hand. Clearly a pattern is emerging as now more than one girl has gone missing. Abe is smart, and he keeps a close eye on everything happening. He sees his mother fighting the bureaucracy of their small town and contending with old emotions. He knows that she really wants to track down these girls and is worried about her own kids being protected.
The case is only growing more urgent as time goes on. Abe is doing his best to try to contend the situation and is concerned about how it will all turn out while also being desperate to know more. Suspenseful and engaging, can the people of this town deal with whatever comes their way? Will they be able to remain strong if it turns out that history repeats itself and the girls are dead? Read this thriller to find out what happens!
Close to the Broken Hearted is the second novel in Michael Hiebert’s Detective Leah Teal series, also known as the Alvin, Alabama series. If you loved the events of the first book, check out this sequel and see what you think of it!
The first novel set the stage and introduced the reader to the small town of Alvin, located in Alabama. The people here are used to a slower way of life, but trouble still has a way of rolling in and shocking them all. When a killer is released from prison, the people of the town may have more revelations than they anticipated as a result.
Sylvie Carson is a young woman of 22 years old that has gotten into plenty of trouble during the course of her life. She’s also known heartbreak, as her infant brother was killed when she was young by someone called Preacher Eli. Sylvie was made an orphan when she was just a teenager, and has a baby that she is raising on her own and doesn’t have anyone to help her.
Leah Teal knows this and is trying to keep her patience intact because of it. She’s the sole detective in this town and has to bear witness to Sylvie ringing up the station all hours of the night and day. There’s usually some new reason behind it that only tends to turn out to be a false alarm. However, when Preacher Eli not only gets let out into the general public free as a bird but moves back to Alvin, Sylvie’s starting to feel truly panicked.
She knows that the law sees him as being someone that did his time. But Abe doesn’t think so at all. He’s also been thinking about his father that he didn’t really know a lot lately as well. Leah doesn’t know what she should tell her son about it to keep his imagination running wild, but she also has to contend with Sylvie. The girl may be right and truly be a target. Can she protect the girl before it’s too late? Read this novel to find out!
