Canadian-American writer and novelist Richard C. Morais is well known for his heart felt and warmly engaging story and novels. Working in the publishing industry for many years now, he’s regarded by many as one of the foremost novelists working within his field.

Speaking about a range of different subjects, he’s established a worldwide following allowing him to become a household name for many. His stories are typically inflected with humor, while also bringing a lot of his own ideas to the table, creating his own style in the process.

Often writing about real people in real situations, he’s known for writing about personalities dealing with their differences despite their similarities. This is something that he’s exceptionally good at, resonating with readers from around the world, largely due to the universality of his subject matter.

Early and Personal Life

Born in 1960 on the 25th of October, Richard C. Morais was born in Lisbon, Portugal, raised by an American mother, along with a Canadian father who had Portuguese descent. Attending a British private school ‘Inter-Community School Zürich,’ spending much of his childhood in Switzerland where he was raised. He would later go on to attend Sarah Lawrence College, before going on to later graduate in 1981, working on his writing all the while.

Becoming a Buddhist, this would come to affect both his writing and his outlook on life, seeing a shift in his thinking. Marrying his wife Susan Agar in 1983, the two of them would go on to move to London, as he would become the Forbes European Correspondent. Now living in Philadelphia with his wife and daughter, he continues to write to this very day, with a lot more to follow.

Writing Career

Beginning as an editor for Forbes, Morais would become a prominent figure in publishing industry prior to writing his first book. This would lead to him later writing ‘Pierre Cardin: The Man Who Became a Label,’ a non-fiction book written in 1991. He’d later turn to fiction in 2008 with ‘The Hundred-Foot Journey,’ which would be his first fictional story that would be his literary debut.

His first book would later be made into a film starring Helen Mirren, which would come out in 2014, and was directed by Lasse Hallström. Morais would go on to receive awards for his work too, with both his fiction and for his work with non-profits. Continuing to maintain a strong presence in the publishing world both online and off, he also continues to put out work at a regular pace.

The Hundred-Foot Journey

Originally published through the Scribner publishing label, this would first come out in 2008 to much acclaim. While it wasn’t a part of any series as such, it was the novel that was to first introduce Morais to the reading public at large. Featuring a sprawling story, it’s self-contained, and would be made into a 2014 film of the same name, making Morais a household name.

This is a charming story and it’s easy to see why it was such a success with readers from all around the world. With well written characters and an interesting story that really takes the readers on a journey themselves, it’s a great novel with multiple layers. Essentially working as a fable, it’s a timeless story that’s open to all ages, in what is an accessible and fun read.

It is in this small-town that they take the locals by storm, with their food being a sure-fire success, infuriating their rival Madame Mallory. This then leads to her taking Hassan under her wing, tutoring him, as he heads off to Paris in pursuit of becoming a high-class chef himself. Does he have what it takes to make it? Can he truly become a success? Where will he finally end in the hundred-foot journey?

The Man with No Borders

First brought out in 2019 on the 1st of September, this would initially come out through the ‘Little A’ publishing label. It wouldn’t be a part of any series, but would be his third work of stand-alone fiction to be released with a self-contained narrative. With a large expansive story, it’s easy to pick up, with a whole host of different themes and ideas running throughout.

There’s a lot of moral questions at the heart of this book, asking many of the bigger questions, and posing some difficult quandaries. That’s what makes this book so engaging though, as it looks at what makes a person truly good, and where their heart lies. It also looks at redemption and whether or not anyone can find it, and ultimately make peace with themselves in the end.

Can he finally find the redemption he seeks? What exactly happened to the man with no borders?
