Emlyn Chand is an American author specializing in a wide variety of genres, from Young Adult to children’s stories. Enjoying praise from sources such as Writer’s Digest (Emlyn winning the Self Published Novel of the Year Award in 2012 for her work in the Young Adult Arena), Emlyn Chand’s success is driven by her love for reading, writing and the telling of stories.
+Biography
Emlyn Chand cannot remember a time when she wasn’t obsessing over the written word; she has had few friends as close to her heart as the numerous books she has consumed over the years.
Often claiming to have emerged from the womb with a pen firmly grasped within her left hand, there is no part of Emlyn Chand’s life that isn’t affected by her affinity for writing. The fact that she has published so many novels in such a short span of time, creating stories in multiple genres, crafted to reach a wide variety of readers, both locally and oversees manifests her passion as an author.
Emlyn has contributed immensely (as an author as well as an editor) to the Novel Publicity Guides for Writing and marketing Fiction Series.
The founder and president of Novel Publicity, Emlyn Chand credits her love for stories to ‘Harold and the Purple Crayon’ by Crocket Johnson. More than the entertainment value of the book, Crocket Johnson’s work showed Emlyn the extent to which the written world could expand her world so long as she had the imagination and will to purse her dreams-which she did with fervor.
One might credit her beginnings for the effort she has injected into her ‘Bird Brain’ book, a series written for children, this revealing to the world her will to impart upon the minds of children the very lessons she learned as a young girl seeking to escape.
Emlyn Chand is married to Falcon storm; she currently writes the majority of her fictional material under Melisa Storm, her real name.
The author is an avid lover of birds, this probably impacting her decision to name a sun conure the official mascot of Novel Publicity.
Melissa loves connecting and engaging with her readers on social media; she can be reached through a number of avenues across the internet.
+Farsighted
Alex Kosmitoras hates his life; his parents are poor (and a little overprotective) and the only other soul in school that will give him the time of day is the school bull; and the fact that he’s blind does not help matters.
At a point in time when he thinks he could never have the normal life he craves, the appearance of a new girl all the way from India changes his world in ways he could never have imagined. Simmi is not only smart but she actually wants to befriend Alex.
And just when sophomore year begins to look up, Alex must contend with another new, and rather unexpected, arrival: a surprisingly accurate ability to see the future. Alex finds that he cannot ignore the visions that begin to haunt his waking hours, especially when they suggest that Simmi might be in mortal danger.
With new friends in toe, many of them bearing gifts of their own, Alex begins his journey to change destiny.
Emlyn Chand’s first novel was well received, probably better than she expected; within its pages, she attempts to tell the story of Alex, a boy whose blindness has often seen him cast out as a freak but whose ability to peer into the future will change his life forever.
Most readers will admit to finding the premise particularly intriguing; few novels have ever attempted to tell stories from the point of view of a blind 16 year old, this then adding to the rather engrossing nature of ‘farsighted’.
Emlyn Chand’s success with ‘farsighted’ comes from her ability to force readers into Alex’s shoes, fixing her narrative into the senses and limitations of her primary protagonist. It is an approach that could have backfired but which Emlyn executed elegantly.
Even while presented from the perspective of a blind 16 year old, the characters of the novel are pretty well rounded, Emlyn Chand taking effort to keep her cast as diverse as possible; and not in that artificial manner common in so many young adult novels.
Most readers can tell when a writer is forcing diversity into his or her cast for the sake of diversity; the complexities of teenage life are subtly presented, but they are never so prominent as to make the novel insufferable, especially to those crowds that are not particularly enamored by the young adult genre.
With decent surprises, noteworthy levels of tension and an intriguing plot, few first novels ever deliver as effectively as Emlyn Chand’s Farsighted.
+Open Heart
The sudden population boom in Grandon Township has introduced a number of unsavory characters into Simmi Shergill’s world, at a time when her life couldn’t be worse; what with her psychic feeling abilities malfunctioning.
The fact that starving herself is doing little to impact her weight problems is only exacerbating matters. She wants to take comfort in her boyfriend Alex who not only loves her but claims that he would do anything for her. And after he risked his own life to protect her the previous summer, she believes him. Yet, she is not quite certain about her feelings, and whether Alex is truly the man of her dreams.
She cannot tell him the truth, that she is so intensely fixated on Dax, the boy that everyone was convinced would kill her; with her emotions running high, Simmi will have to decide between the blind seer that would die for her and the telekinetic she knows could be her end.
The second novel in Emlyn Chand’s farsighted series picks up where the first book left off, only a few months later; with ‘Open Heart’ Emlyn Chand makes a concerted effort to explore Simmi and her journey to understand her life, mind and soul.
As the primary protagonist of the novel, she spends quite a number of pages undergoing constant turmoil, not only because of the weight issues that plague her self-esteem but her waxing and waning loyalties to boyfriend Alex and friend Shapri. Emlyn masterfully represents Simmi’s insecurities and fears, and how they affect those around her.
Continuing to pursue a diverse cast from various ethnic backgrounds, Emlyn does falter in some areas, especially when trying to justify Simmi’s actions and decisions; Open Heart is none the less another stellar entry into the Farsighted series.
